Obituary

Mrs. Mae G. Wilson departed this life at the age of 91 on Sunday, October 2, 2022. She was born in Monroe, New York, and attended school there until the family moved to Dillwyn, Virginia, where she was baptized at an early age. In 1947, she graduated from Buckingham Training School. Mae was one of seven children in the family of Joshua Anderson, Sr., and Mary Rosa Gray Anderson. She received the Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia State College (renamed Virginia State University) in 1953, and it was there that she would meet her husband, Roosevelt Wilson.

A dedicated servant, she met the demands of being a wife, mother, and community member extremely well. Her life's journey included travel with her husband and children to Alaska, Okinawa, Hawaii as well as other places in West Virginia and Kentucky. It was in Hampton, Virginia, where she reared her children and shared her many talents with the community as a volunteer for several years at Aberdeen Elementary School. Mrs. Wilson was a member of Aberdeen Gardens and Historic Association for 14 plus years. Her servant spirit was further manifested as Teen Director, Program Specialist, and Program Director for Girls Incorporated of the Greater Peninsula, Newport News, Virginia.

Girls Incorporated honored her contributions with the "Community Star Award" in 1992, a recognition for "outstanding women who have achieved extraordinary success in their work and who are exemplary role models for girls." In 1986 and 1989 respectively, she received this organization's National Sewing Award for the "Development of Cabbage Patch Fashion Show" and the National Award for "International Flair. To receive them, she attended the national conventions held in Atlanta and Los Angeles.

For over 20 years, Mrs. Wilson was a member of the National Council of Negro Women, Incorporated (NCNW). She served on various committees, such as Ways and Means, Community Services and Visionaries. She chaired the Education Assistance Committee, which gives educational support to three high school students enrolled in Hampton or Newport News schools. As a result of her tireless efforts, several students received financial assistance for their college tuition. Mae Gertrude Wilson received the "Woman of the Year" award in 2007 for her outstanding and dedicated services. As recently as 2021, the NCNW presented her with a "Honorary Membership" due to her significant contributions of time, energy, and leadership.

She is preceded in death by her parents, six siblings, and spouse LTC (retired) Roosevelt Wilson.
