Wayman R.
Jones
d. Mar 6, 2026
Wayman R. Jones peacefully entered eternal rest on March 6, 2026, surrounded by the love and presence of his family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Wayman lived a life marked by quiet strength, steadfast faith, dignity, and an unwavering commitment to those he loved.
Born on October 13, 1945, in Newport News, Virginia, Wayman was the cherished son of the late Thomas Roosevelt Jones and Lena Rebecca Jones. He was raised in a family grounded in faith, discipline, and hard work — values that would shape the man he became and guide him throughout his life.
Wayman was educated in the Newport News Public School System and proudly graduated from Huntington High School in 1965. Shortly thereafter, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Navy. His time in service further refined the integrity, discipline, and resilience that defined his character.
After completing his military service, Wayman began a long and honorable career with CSX Railroad, where he worked diligently and rose to the distinguished position of Master Electrician. He took great pride in his work and in providing for his family. In 2009, he medically retired to begin dialysis treatments. Yet even through health challenges, Wayman's spirit remained unshaken. Illness never defined him — his faith and determination did.
Wayman was united in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Sandra Jones, and together they shared 53 beautiful years of marriage. Their union was a testament to enduring love, partnership, and grace. Through every season of life, they stood side by side.
A man of deep and unwavering faith, Wayman trusted God in every circumstance. Even as his health declined, he never complained, never wavered, and never lost sight of his belief that God was in control. He faithfully attended St. Vincent on Sundays alongside his beloved brother Jerry and his nephew Antonio. Worship was not merely routine for him — it was relationship, reverence, and renewal.
His life embodied the words of Scripture:
"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith."
— 2 Timothy 4:7
These words so beautifully reflect the way Wayman lived — steadfast, faithful, and unwavering until the very end.
Family was the heartbeat of his life. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Sandra Jones of Newport News, Virginia; his loving children: Rodney of Portsmouth, Virginia; Vanessa (Eric) of Newport News, Virginia; Shabae (Robert) of Greenville, North Carolina; and LaWanda of Newport News, Virginia.
He was a proud and loving grandfather to JamesJr., Raven, Janae, Rodney Jr., Kole, Robert Jr., Jeremiah, Jaide, Toriah, and Jania, and was blessed with three great-grandchildren who brought immeasurable joy to his heart.
Wayman is also survived by his only living brother, Jerry (Sharon) of Newport News, Virginia, whose faithful presence and support meant more than words can express.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Thomas, Micajah, Leroy, Edward, Ronald, and Calvin, and his sisters Gwendolyn, Violet, and Mary Alice.
His grandchildren were his pride and purpose. He faithfully picked up Jeremiah and Jaide from school every single day during their early years, pouring into them with consistency and love. When the grandchildren walked through the door, he would greet them with his joyful and familiar call, "Heeeeeey! Where y'all coming from?"
Even on dialysis days, he never allowed discomfort to steal his joy. He remained present, engaged, and full of love. Wayman took immense pride in his home. He cut his grass weekly with precision — his yard so pristine it looked like freshly laid carpet. Yard work became a sacred bonding time with his brothers, and his nephews often stopped by to talk and share in his steady presence. One nephew would even pause his route just to spend time with him — because being around Wayman meant something.
If he helped you, you would never hear him mention it again. He filled in the gaps without being asked twice. He served quietly, loved deeply, and stood firmly in his faith.
To know Wayman was to know stability. To know him was to witness humility, integrity, and unconditional love in action. His life was not loud — it was consistent. It was not boastful — it was honorable. And it was anchored in faith.
His legacy will forever live on in the lives he shaped, the family he led, the faith he modeled, and the love he gave so freely.
Well done, good and faithful servant.
