Obituary

Walter Lloyd Lovett, Sr. passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his four daughters on March 18, 2025. Walter was born in Elizabeth City County, VA to the late Lewis A. and Leola Swann Lovett. He graduated from Phenix High School in 1947 and earned a bachelor's degree from Virginia State College in 1951. He served in the US Army from 1951-1953 and went on to earn master's and doctorate degrees from Indiana University.

A member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Walter received numerous awards and honors from civic and sports organizations for his work as an exceptional teacher, coach and mentor at Carver High School in Newport News, VA, Virginia State College (University) in Ettrick, VA and Hampton Institute (University) in Hampton, VA.

Walter was predeceased by his college sweetheart and wife of 65 years Lillian Williams Lovett, son Walter "Skitch" Lovett, Jr., great grandson Amari Seldon, four brothers and their wives: Heyward, Wilbert (Jeannette), Lewis (Rozzie), and A. Bernard (Emily) Lovett and brothers-in-law Clovis Gault and John H. "Sonny" Williams, Jr.

Left to cherish his memory are four loving daughters: Gina Lovett Lewis (William), Kimberly Lovett, Susan Lovett and Sybil Lovett Gordon (Stacey); eleven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, a special cousin, Stanley Lovett, two sisters-in-law, Gladys W. Gault and Doris J. Williams and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A memorial service will be held at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 171 Semple Farm Road Hampton, VA on Saturday, March 29, 2025 at 11am.
