Vivian Lorraine Coles was born on March 21,1949 in Newport News, Virginia to Emma Spruiel and the late Dan Spruiel. Surrounded by her family and friends, at the age of 74, she passed peacefully away on March 9, 2024 at her home in Suffolk, Virginia.

She graduated from Huntington High School in 1967 and that same year on April 1st, she married David Whitley Jr. They had 4 children together, Marchele, Rosalind, Wanda, and Derrick.

In 1983, she was baptized and joined Calvary Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Also, in 1983 on November 24th, she married Tyrone Clifford Coles in Newport News, Virginia.

At Calvary, Vivian was known for her hospitality and talent as a cook. It was clear to all who knew her that her ministry involved food and often she and others from the church would visit the sick and shut-in with healthy vegetarian meals to share. Also, she served in prison ministry.

After spending many years in Newport News, Tyrone and Vivian moved to Eddy, Texas where they lived until March 2023 when they moved back to Virginia after Vivian's illness.

Vivian was a gifted seamstress and had her own window treatment business. She was also an electrician, carpenter, artist, and interior decorator. However, she spent many of her last years as a professional care giver. Several families hand picked her to care for their loved ones.

Vivian was described by those who knew her best as God-fearing, funny, caring and a devoted friend.

The outpouring of love that she showed to her children, family and friends will be missed. She was a loving wife, mother, and daughter.  Her family will love her always and forever.

Cherishing her memory are her husband Tyrone Clifford Coles; her children, Marchele Glander (Larry), Rosalind Whitley-Martin (Samuel), Wanda Whitley and Derrick Whitley; her mother, Emma Spruiel; her siblings Anthony Spruiel, Pamela Snowden (Calvin); stepchildren, Michelle Coles Harvey, Tyrone Coles Jr. (Tinette), Dana Robinson-Orie, Terry Robinson,19 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren and a host of family members and friends.

The repast will follow the funeral service at Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center at 2410 Wickham Avenue Newport News, Virginia 23607.

Viewing will be held Sunday, March 17, 2024 from 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel at 1601 27th Street Newport News, Virginia 23607.The funeral service is Monday March 18, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Calvary Seventh-Day Adventist Church 1200- 17th St, Newport News, VA 23607.
