Virgil W.
Mosley
d. Mar 14, 2023
Early morning on March 14, 2023, the Lord called Virgil Webb Mosley home to rest in the comfort of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Virgil was born on February 14, 1933 in Marion County, Indiana to Abe and Dewey Mosley. Born sixth of seven kids, he became a Ward of Marion County at age eight and remained in foster care until he was eighteen. Virgil was prepared to immediately enlist in the military after graduation from high school when a Sunday School teacher recognized how smart and special he was and gave him $500 to go to Ball State Teacher's College. God's hand was certainly all over this act of kindness because this gift changed the entire trajectory of his life.
Working several jobs while studying, Virgil was also a founding father establishing the Delta Iota Chapter of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity on campus. Although Virgil considered himself to be only an average student, he graduated with a BS in Education and was commissioned in the United States Air Force as a 2 nd Lieutenant. Retired Major Virgil Mosely is a Vietnam Veteran and had a distinguished career in the Air Force as a Navigator and Munitions Squadron Commander. Virgil retired in 1975 after a twenty year career. In 1976, he became affectionately known in the Hampton School System as "cool" Mr. Mosley. He retired on June 30, 1997, spending most of those years as a Math teacher at Phoebus High School.
Virgil is preceded in death by the love of his life, Pearl, who he affectionately called Missy. He often spoke of being reunited with her again. They were married for just shy of 53 years. He is also preceded in death by his parents, his six siblings and two nephews.
Surviving Virgil and thanking God for his life and his love are his six children, Rita Twiggs, Sharon Akins, Jacqulyn Franklin, Vaughn Mosley, Virgil Wayne Mosley, and Christopher Mosley. He is also survived by his grandchildren, E. Joy Rivers (Gary), Alicia Akins, Kara Akins and Tyler Mosley. Adding joy that only little ones can, are his great grandchildren, Titus Rivers, Kendrick Rivers and Calaya Rivers.
Viewing will be held Friday, March 24, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, 1601-27th Street, Newport News, Va. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 25, 2023 at Second Baptist Church East End, 3307 Chestnut Avenue, Newport News, Va. Interment with full military honors will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens.
