Velma Jean Britt , born March 4, 1947, in Hampton, Virginia, left us and went home to be with the LORD on February 16, 2026. She was the daughter of Pompey Lowery Jr. and Marguerite Lowery who were both well known in the community and had a sister, Barbara Fleming.
Velma graduated from George P. Phenix High School, Hampton, Virginia. Post graduating high school, she worked in hospitality management and dedicated 19 years of her life married to Thomas Britt, from that union they welcomed three children, Kevin, Donna and Michelle. She was a devoted United States Air Force spouse and often participated in engagements hosted by the military.
She was an exceptional mother, sister, grandmother an inspiration and a best friend who presented a loving and caring heart.
Velma is survived by her three children, Kevin Britt, Donna Britt, Michelle Britt; one daughter-in-law, Jean Britt; one son-in-law, Frank White; four grandchildren, Kevin Britt II, Shonte Cooper, LaShelle Ingram, Alvin Gardner Jr.; seven great grandchildren, Donnell Smith, NyAsia Smith, Codarryl Cooper Jr., Lyric Ingram, Montana Britt, Santana Britt, Montagu Britt; sister, Barbara Fleming; one brother-in-law, John Fleming; a dear friend whom she considered her other son, Brenton Service; all of whom cherished every moment spent with her.
She leaves behind nieces and nephews that also had the opportunity to witness her beautiful soul. Velma prioritized spending time with her family and those precious memories will never be forgotten.
Velma will forever be missed. Her warm spirit will always resonate with her loved ones as well as extended relatives and friends she met along the way.
Viewing will be held 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Thursday, February 26, 2026 at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, 1601-27th Street, Newport News, Va. 23607. A celebration honoring her life will take place 12:00 noon Friday, February 27, 2026 at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel (Downtown). The Interment will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens, 155 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, Va. 23666
