John Henry Mayo
d. Jun 10, 2024
TSgt (RET) John Henry Mayo transitioned to eternal rest on Monday, June 10, 2024, in Durham, North Carolina, with family by his side.
John was born January 26, 1941, in Wake County, North Carolina, to Kenneth Mayo and Mary Hockaday. In 1942, his parents relocated the family to Newport News, Virginia, to explore greater financial opportunities. While a student attending Huntington High School, John met the love of his life, Barbara Ann McIntyre. He graduated in 1960 and enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he excelled as a Communications Specialist for 20 years. He married Barbara Ann on April 21, 1962. While serving his country and growing their family, John earned an Associate of Arts degree from Saint Leo College (now University) in 1978. After Honorable Service and retirement, John championed his second career with the United States Postal Service as a Mail Carrier for 22 years for the City of Hampton.
Double Dip, as affectionately known by his grandchildren, was an avid reader and very active with the Huntington High School Alumni c/o 1960, serving as treasurer for many years. He will be remembered for his calm demeanor, kind heart, and love of family. That love extended to other children as he and Barbara were foster parents for several years, providing a safe and secure home for many children in transition. He was always willing to help anyone in need however he could. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. He was an active member of the Merrimack Elementary School PTA and the Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students).
Awaiting Double Dip's arrival are his beloved wife, Barbara Ann McIntyre Mayo; cherished daughters Barbara Ann "Annie" Mayo Falices and Evelyn "JoJo" Mayo; parents Kenneth Mayo and Mary Hockaday Mayo; siblings Linwood Mayo, Virginia Brown, Mary Louise Mayo, and George Mayo.
