Tommie Mitchell, 81, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2026. He was born on May 10, 1944, in North Carolina, to the late James and Carrie Mitchell, and later made Newport News, Virginia his home.

He is survived by his wife, Vera Mitchell; his daughters, Cherlynn Jamall and Narvitta Ledbetter; his special son Cornelius Hicks, Jr.; his beloved grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and several siblings.

Tommie was a 1963 graduate of Carver High School in Newport News, Virginia. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and later retired from Howmet after many years of dedicated service.

A longtime community activist and entrepreneur committed to justice and fairness; Tommie was also a man of strong faith. He was a devoted member of Livingwaters Redeemed Apostolic Church of Christ for more than 30 years, where he served faithfully.

Viewing will be held 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Thursday, January 29, 2026 at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, 1601-27th Street, Newport News, Va. 23607. A homegoing celebration will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 30,2026 at Living Waters Way of the Cross, 617-48th Street, Newport News, Va. Interment will be held in Albert G. Horton, Jr. Veteran Cemetery at a later date.
