Obituary

On December 14, 2024, our Heavenly Father, with all His grace and mercy, reached down and pulled up His son, Thomas Douglas Johnson II, home.  Thomas, also known as Tom or Tom John, was born early in the morning on January 30, 1989, in Richmond, Virginia, to Thomas "Douglas" Johnson and Alesia Sonyaro Frazier-Johnson.  Born with his eyes wide open, Thomas was eager to maneuver through life and its challenges.  As a young man, Thomas made the decision to give his life to the Lord at Denbigh Church of God. Thomas was the oldest of his siblings, Christopher Frazier Johnson and Troy Chandler Johnson.  Throughout his life, he would often take credit for his position as the oldest sibling.

Thomas attended Denbigh Christian Academy in Newport News, Virginia, for elementary school, where he received a strong Christian-based fundamental education.  It was during Thomas' elementary years that he found a love for sports.  He played recreational baseball, soccer, football, and basketball.  He also played on a traveling soccer team, the Aztecs, for 5 years, as well as a Boo Williams AAU traveling basketball team, for 7 years. In those years, Thomas' 11 and under basketball team placed 7th in the nation in Cocoa Beach, Florida.  This was a remarkable achievement because they were the only Newport News team to ever place that high in the national ranking with players only selected from the Newport News area.  These traveling sports teams also exposed Thomas to numerous places and people.

Thomas advanced through Passage Middle School and graduated from Denbigh High School where he excelled in his academics and athletics. Thomas played as part of the starting lineup for both junior varsity and varsity basketball, as well as varsity volleyball, at Denbigh High School.  Thomas later attended Hampton University and Alpha College of Real Estate.

As Thomas became older, he developed a passion for sales in the travel and vacation industries.  He worked diligently for major travel companies such as Marriott Resorts, Diamond Resorts, and Wyndham Resorts; where he soared to the top of the sales producer charts, winning several awards and accolades for being the top salesman in the region.

Thomas had his own unique way of enjoying life.  He loved to travel and thoroughly enjoyed talking to people.  He never met a stranger, and his smile would light up a room.  Most of all, Thomas loved spending time with his daughter, Aaliyah. Together, their laughter was infectious. They spent time attending events at the Coliseum, going to the playground, playing sports, watching TV and just being goofy.  He truly loved and adored his daughter and had big dreams for her future.  Thomas took great pride in being a father.

Thomas was preceded in death by his grandparents, Dr. Maurice W. Frazier, Alma C. Frazier, Thomas Miles Johnson, Laura Lee Johnson, and one aunt, Jean DeVel Frazier.  Thomas leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Aaliyah Johnson, his parents Alesia Frazier-Johnson and Thomas "Douglas" Johnson Sr., his brothers Christopher Johnson and Troy Johnson (Adeja Stinson), one aunt Acquanetta Frazier, MD, one uncle William Stancil, one great aunt Virgie Spellman, two nieces Samiya and Sadia Johnson, first cousins Maurice Stancil, Allegra Stancil (David Hamlet), and William Stancil II, Godparents Brian Tyler, and Alicia Johns, Felicia Stokes (Aaliyah's mother), as well as other special family members Morris Bethea, Jeremy Banks, Corey Smith, Darryl Shazier, Brooke Godwin, and Jamal Williams.  Lastly, he also leaves behind special brothers that he loved with all his heart: Delonte Doles and Ahmad Watson, along with many close family members and friends.

Viewing will be held Friday, January 3, 2025 from 11:00- a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, 1601-27th Street, Newport News Va. A funeral service will be held 12 Noon, Saturday, January 4, 2025 at Calvary Chapel Church ,15553 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, Va. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens.
