Thelma Bernice Vaughan was born in Yorktown, Virginia on October 21, 1945, and went home to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 9, 2023. She was the daughter of the late James E. and Clara Lee Lewis, and a devoted wife for 44 years to the late Eurel Vaughan.
Thelma was educated in York County Public Schools, and graduated from James Weldon Johnson High School in 1964.
Thelma lived and worked in New York for many years, working for the music industry; initially CBS Records and retiring as the Assistant Director of Royalties from BMG Records. She was a huge music lover with a record collection to rival any other, with over one thousand albums, which always filled her home with melodies. Thelma was a great storyteller and had many stories to tell of her frequent encounters with the industry's recording artists.
Thelma accepted Christ at an early age and was a faithful member of Allen Memorial AME Church in Brooklyn, New York. Upon returning home to Virginia, she attended Zion Prospect Baptist Church, where she sang in the Senior Choir and participated in the Singles Ministry.
Thelma was preceded in death by her husband, Eurel Vaughan; one grandson, Dwayne McClammy; four brothers: Eddie Sedgwick, James Sedgwick, Percy Sedgwick, and Nathaniel Sedgwick, and one sister, Elsie Sedgwick.
She leaves to cherish, her beloved and faithful daughter, Robin McClammy (fiancé Melvin Duke); two grandsons: Christopher McClammy, and Keith Allen (best friend Angelia Knott); and one great granddaughter, Kaliya McClammy; one sister, Julia M. Barnes; one brother, Robert L. Sedgwick (wife Gloria); one goddaughter, Kay Riddle; a very special friend, Barbara Gardner, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.
