Obituary

Ms. Sylvia Anita Sessoms was born April 20, 1957,in Edgecomb County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Bishop Herman L. Sessoms (First Lady Winnie) of Newport News, VA, and her mother the late Mrs. Willie Mae Mooring-Pippens (Top). She departed from this life after a brief illness on August 20, 2010. Sylvia is preceded in death by her mother; brother James Earl Sessoms, grandparents and uncles. Sylvia graduated in 1975 from North Pitt High School, Pitt County, NC. She relocated to Newport News, VA, in 1978 and was employed at Newport News General Hospital. She later went on to work for her sister Shirley Newsomes cleaning business. She was a loyal and dedicated employee to Carolina Clean, Inc., until her illness. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior in 1996 and later joined New Shiloh Christian Church, Newport News, VA under the leadership of her father. She was the President of the Usher board and remained a faithful and dedicated member until her death. Sylvia leaves to cherish her memories her father, Bishop Herman Sessoms (First Lady Winnie) Newport News, VA; her stepfather, James Pippens, Greenville, NC; her beloved sons, Derod Sessoms and Robert Shaun Sessoms, Newport News, VA; her beloved daughter, Renita Sessoms, Newport News, VA.; her sisters, Shirley Newsome (David) Suffolk, VA, and Mary Ann Chance (Billie) Greenville, NC, Deloris Greene, Newport News, VA, Elaine Lawrence, Williamston, NC.; Pamela Boston (cousin); her brothers, William Ray Cox, Washington, DC., Arthur Jean Cox, Alvin Sessoms, Hampton; grandchildren, Kayla Bolden and Tyqwane Daniels, her aunts, Connie Dickerson, Bessie Little and Clara Brinkley of Newport News, VA.; her uncles, William Mooring (Shelia) and Arthur Sessoms (Edna) , her extended family and a host of nieces, nephews, cousin and friends. Viewing will begin 12 Noon Friday , August 27, 2010 at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, with visitation from 7-8 PM. Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM, Saturday , August 28, 2010 at St. James Fellowship Church of God, 4312 Orcutt Avenue, Newport News, with Rev. Michael L. Harris, Sr .,officiating. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens.
