Sophie Graham Goodman, daughter of the late Timothy and Josephine Graham departed this life on October 31, 2024
A native of Newport News, Virginia, she received her early education in the Newport News Public School System graduating from Huntington High School In 1956. She later pursued a Home Economics degree from Hampton Institute (presently Hampton University) for two years. As a gifted musician she played piano, clarinet and the xylophone (bells).
Her professional career began as a seamstress at the Gloria Manufacturing Corporation in 1959. In 1967 she began employment with the Department of Army at Fort Eustis Army Base where she remained for 26 years. She used her musical talents and served the United House of Prayer for All People, Ivy Baptist Church, Emmanuel Grace Baptist Church, First United Baptist Church, Queen Street Baptist Church, Third Baptist Church, Carver Memorial Presbyterian and Word Christian Fellowship Ministries for more than 50 years.
She is preceded in death by two sisters, Dilsie Alexander and Elsie Josephine Graham. She leaves to cherish her memory three children, Sheryl A. Graham, Leonard A. Goodman, Jr. and Steve V. Goodman, two sisters Marjorie Graham McCollough and Cynthia D. Graham, two grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 16, 2024 at Ivy Baptist Church, 50 Maple Avenue, Newport News, VA. Entombment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens.
