Sherman Whitaker , a devoted husband, loving father, faithful church member passed away on May 22 at the age of 84. Born on May 30, 1938, in Enfield, NC, to Morris Whitaker and Isabell Smith, Sherman's life was characterized by unwavering dedication to his family, service to his community, and a deep love for his country values. His memory will forever be cherished by those who loved him.
Sherman's life was profoundly shaped by his 58 years of marriage to his beloved wife, Shirley A. Whitaker. Their enduring love and unwavering commitment were a shining example to all. Through thick and thin, they stood side by side, providing support, encouragement, and unwavering love to each other.
His children, daughter, Sharlyn K. Sykes; and son,Titus S. Whitaker (Daniela Whitaker), mourn the loss of their loving father but will forever be grateful for his love and the lessons he imparted.
He was preceded in death by his son, Marcus E. Whitaker. His loss was deeply felt and always remembered. Sherman was also the last surviving member of nine siblings.
Sherman found strength and solace in his faith and was a dedicated member of the Joynes Road Church of God. He served his church community in various capacities, including as an usher, Sunday school teacher, church bus driver, and choir member. Sherman's commitment to his church family was a testament to his deep faith and his desire to serve and uplift others.
Outside of his family and church, Sherman had a passion for fishing. He found peace and joy in casting his line and being in nature's embrace. The act of fishing allowed him to reflect, connect with loved ones, and find serenity in the beauty of the natural world. A proud Army veteran, Sherman dedicated himself to serving his country and community. He also worked at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Naval Weapons Station in Yorktown, where he demonstrated unwavering dedication and a strong work ethic.
Sherman was blessed with the love and joy of his grandchildren. Morgan Whitaker (Abigail Whitaker), Hope Reyes (Christian Reyes), and Sterling Sykes – who will forever treasure the memories and love shared with their beloved grandfather. The arrival of his first great-granddaughter Luna Reyes also brought him immense joy.
Sherman Whitaker also had three sisters-in-law, Helen C. Whitaker of Freeport, New York, Jean Watson, Helen Whitaker of Hampton, Virginia; and a brother-in-law, Roy Mathis Jr. He also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews who are dear to his heart. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. His kindness, faith, sense of humor and love will continue to inspire and guide us all.
A funeral service to celebrate Sherman's life will be held on May 30 at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel at 1601 27th Street, Newport News, VA. Family, friends, and members of the community are invited to join in honoring Sherman's memory. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Peninsula Rescue Mission or Bible Broadcasting Network in Sherman's name.
As we mourn the loss of Sherman, let us find solace in the cherished memories we hold dear and take comfort in the knowledge that he is at peace. May his soul rest eternally, and may we carry forward his legacy of love, faith, and service in our own lives.
