Sandra Delores Nicholson, 73, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 26, 2026, in the comfort of her home surrounded by loved ones. She was born on May 21, 1952, in Newport News, VA, to Rhina (Randall) Whidbee and the late Willie Gholson, Sr.
Sandra married the love of her life, Jerry Nicholson, on May 20, 1972. Through this union two beautiful daughters were born, Shelita and Nikki. She was known for her affectious smile, kindness toward others, promptness, organizational skills, love of family gatherings, and most of all her love for God. She was additionally known for always taking pictures to capture lasting memories. She made herself available at any time if you needed a listening ear or words of encouragement, and many called her their "second mom." She was a faithful member of United Church of God in Hampton, and she spent countless hours dedicating her time to serving in several capacities, as well as still making time to attend school events, sporting events, celebrations, and graduations for her children, grandchildren, family, and friends. Sandra retired in 2014 as a Master Shipbuilder after 42 years of employment as a Submarine Engineer Administrator Assistant at the Newport News Shipyard. She developed lasting friendships during her time in Newport News, Va and Lawton, Oklahoma. She will be forever missed.
She was preceded in death by her father Willie Gholson, Sr. and brothers Larry Gholson and Willie Gholson, Jr.
Her memory will be forever cherished by husband Jerry Nicholson; daughters Shelita Nicholson-Gillis (Lamont) and Sondra "Nikki" Nicholson; grandchildren DeAndre Gillis and Jayla Gillis; parents Rhina Whidbee (George); brother Edward Gholson (Lou); aunt Paulette Randall; and a host of loving in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family would like to thank everyone for their calls, visits, prayers, and gestures of love during this time of bereavement.
Viewing will be held from 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Thursday, March 5, 2026, at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel. Family will receive visitors from 2:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life service will be held 12 Noon, Friday, March 6, 2026, at Zion Baptist Church. Interment will be in Hampton Memorial Gardens.
