Obituary

Robert Lee Barnes , 78, of Hampton, VA, while a patient at North Hampton Rehabilitation Center, passed away on September 3, 2025.

Robert was the youngest of six children born to Howard and Novella Barnes in Murfreesboro, North Carolina, on April 17, 1947. Remembered as a loving, devoted father, brother, and friend tempered with generosity, kindness, and good humor.

Robert's formative years were spent in Murfreesboro, where he attended and graduated from Calvin Scott Brown High School in 1965.  Upon high school completion, Robert was drafted and served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

Following his discharge from the Army, Robert began his higher education at Newport News Apprentice School, where he received a four-year certificate of completion in 1973.

For four years, he worked as a Sheet Metal Mechanic at Newport News Shipyard, and later took his talents to Norfolk Naval Shipyard for another 32 years.  While there, he became a member of the Norfolk Naval Tiger Team, where he traveled extensively to Scotland, Hawaii, Washington State, and beyond prior to retiring in 2009.

When he wasn't traveling for work, Robert enjoyed traveling with his family, cheering on his beloved Dallas Cowboys, working in the yard, and tearing up the dance floor with his wife. Robert was never seen or heard without a joke or a smile.

Robert leaves to mourn and cherish memories: His wife, Linda G. Barnes; three children, Patrick Robinson, Robert D. Barnes (Kim Barnes), and April Barnes. Two sisters, Carrie Elizabeth Joyner (Henry), Susie Marie Barnes, and sister-in-law Faye Barnes. Five grandchildren: Kierra L. Barnes, Robert D. Barnes Jr., Jeane' Patrick (Tyrese Patrick), Marcus Barnes (Danielle Barnes), and Jaiden L. Wilson.  Robert also leaves behind 3 great-grandchildren, Rynnlee, Everlyn, and Jrue, along with 4 nieces and 2 nephews.  He is preceded in death by his brother, Howard Clinton Barnes, Jr., and two sisters, Nora Bernice Barnes, Mary Ellen Barnes, and one great-grandchild, Ryland.
