Riley Moore,
Sr.
d. Jun 15, 2025
Mr. Riley Ed Moore, Sr., affectionately known as "Jimmy" , was born on April 29, 1945 in Enfield, North Carolina to the late Bill Applewhite, Sr. and Dollie Virginia Applewhite. He transitioned peacefully in his home on Father's Day, June 15, 2025.
Riley received his formal education in the Halifax County Public School System and was a 1963 graduate of T. S. Inborden High School in Enfield, NC. He also obtained a licensure for Brick Masonry from Wilson Technical College in Wilson, NC. When he married Viola Moore (née Ransome) in 1966, they relocated to Newport News, VA and there they raised a family. For 42 years he diligently worked for the Newport News Shipyard and was a member of the Steele Worker Union.
He was a faithful member of Miracle Temple Baptist Church and served on several auxiliaries, including Trustee Board, Usher's Ministry and Men's Fellowship. Riley enjoyed fishing, hunting as well as civic and community engagement. Physical activity was also important to him and he ranked 'brown belt' in the martial art, Karate. He was dedicated to family and held his mother to a high regard. Annually, he would travel back to North Carolina to fellowship for family reunions hosted at the local Gardner's restaurant, a staple in the community. Riley never forgot his roots and frequently kept in contact with old buddies and in-laws.
Nicknamed by close friends as, "Terrible Thang", some common catchphrases he would use to express his southern personality were; "Don't take no wooden nickels" , "Look down the road before you get down the road" and "Think before you act or the results may be devastating" , to name a few. Each evening until his departure, he would treat himself to dinner with a glass of sweet tea at the neighborhood, Applebee's. Riley was well known to the establishment and to majority of the staff.
Those left to cherish his memories are: his lovely mother, Dollie Applewhite of Enfield, NC; children, Patricia Smith (Aaron) of Glen Allen, VA, Riley Ed Moore, Jr. of Pinetops, NC and Ebony Farmer of Rocky Mount, NC; grandchildren, Jermaine Moore, Jasmine Wiggins (Kevin), Shatese Johnson, Justin Smith, Tymire House and Morrisyn Farmer; great-grands, Jer'Kari, Kinsley and Jrue; siblings, Ethel Mae Hines, Louise Applewhite, Pecolia Lassiter (Forrest), Susie Dinkins (Raymond), Dollie McCowan (James), Amy Lynn Applewhite, Bill Applewhite, Jr. (Barbara Jean), Joseph Lassiter (Audrey), Curtis Applewhite, Sam Applewhite and Robert Applewhite (Betty); special niece, Shell Mitchell as well as a host of other nieces, great-nieces, nephews, great-nephews, cousins and friends.
