Obituary

Pastor Mary Louise Canady Johnson , was born December 8, 1946 in Wilson, North Carolina to the late Bertha and Linwood Canady.  She passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 24, 2024.  She was raised in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

Mary attended the North Carolina Public School System.  She gave her life to Christ at an early age.  Upon her relocating to Virginia, she became employed with the Hampton City School system, where she became a bus driver and retired in 2019 after 30 years of faithful and dedicated service. In 2008, she founded and Pastored Powerhouse of Praise Church.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse C. Johnson, Sr.; one sister, Barbara Canady; four brothers, Linnie Earl Parker, James Canady, Anthony Canady, and Timothy Canady.

She leaves to cherish her memory; sisters, Ruby (Milton) Watson of Ashburn, Va., Juanita (Milto Nelson) Canady, Vivian (Cornell) Thompson of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Teresa (Melvin) Chapman of Nashville, North Carolina; Carolyn Smith Allen of Smithfield, North Carolina, Charlotte (Jackie) of Stantonburg, North Carolina; brothers, Linwood Canady (Elee), Larrie (Quay) Canady and Calvin Canady of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Bobby (Fercia) Tucker of Elm City, North Carolina, Christopher Tucker of Wilson, North Carolina, Antonio Tucker of Wilson, North Carolina.

She also leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Bertha (Jerry) Simms, Jesse C. Johnson, Jr., Robin (Eugene) Montgomery, Fredrick T. (Leta) Canady, Tasha Brown; her bonus daughters, Nyeisha, Ieisha Johnson; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Viewing will be held Friday, November 8, 2024 from 11:00 am until 5:00 pm at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, 1601-27th Street, Newport News, Va.  A funeral service will be held 11:00 am, Saturday, November 9, 2024 at Transformation Life Center, 151 Wythe Parkway, Hampton, Va. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens.
