Obituary

On Wednesday, July 24, 2024, Pastor James E. Mayo Sr., 92, transitioned from his earthly home and entered into eternal rest with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

He was born in Warwick County in Newport News, Virginia on January 5, 1932. He served during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1954. He worked for the C and O railroad and later established his own business, J. E. Mayo Construction Co. (JEM) in 1962 as a contractor, licensed and bonded.

After receiving his call to ministry, he started training with the Apostolic Faith Church of God Live-On, under the leadership of Bishop Jesse Hendshaw in 1956. Later at Holy Tabernacle Church, he served faithfully as deacon, Sunday school teacher of the adult class, Superintendent, Co-Pastor and also Pastor.

In June 1982, he was ordained by Triumph Pentecostal Church under Pastor Joseph G. Snead in an open forum. In 1983, Pastor Mayo founded Denbigh Church of Deliverance which later became Mount Carmel Pentecostal Church of Deliverance. As Pastor, he served faithfully 41 years.

In 1985, Pastor Mayo married his wife, Minister Nora Mayo. It was at this point together, they served the Lord. Out of their union two children were born, James E. Mayo Jr. and Angela M. Mayo; and two step-children, Shaun and Taira McGriff, became part of our blended family.

In 2010, Pastor Mayo was ascended and was affirmed as prophet in the Lord's church. As a member of the Covenant Pastor's Association (C.P.A.) he served faithfully until he became ill. In 2019, Pastor Mayo received  an honorary Doctorate of Divinity under Dr. Cheryl R. Hodges, Founder and Chancellor of Breath of Life Deliverance Apostolic and Prophetic University.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories, his beloved wife of 39 years, Elder Nora L. Mayo; one son, James E. Mayo Jr. (Charee'), one daughter, Angela M. Carson (Bruce), one step-son, Shaun C. McGriff; one step-daughter, Taira J. Ashlock (Saxton); 12 grand children and step grandchildren combined; one sister, Catherine Mayo Braxton (Cornelius); many nieces, nephews, cousins, and many loving brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Mayo; his mother, Ann Lether Mayo; two brothers, John D. Mayo and Thomas Mayo; one sister, Mamie Lee Mayo McNeil; and one son Ronald Saab.
