Born in Newport News, Virginia, she was the daughter of Emma Stokes Simmons and the late Charlie Simmons. Revered as a second mother, the late Sarah Langley played an integral role in shaping Parthenia's early years with love and guidance.
Parthenia's unwavering dedication to Christ began at an early age, and she faithfully served as a member of First Baptist Church East End (FBCEE) in Newport News, Virginia. Baptized there, she was actively involved in various ministries including League of Christian Women, Golden Key, the FBCEE Board of Education; and she served as Deaconess Emerita.
After graduating from Phenix High School in 1963, Parthenia continued her education at Hampton Institute. She also educated countless Head Start students in Washington DC, National Youth Sports Program participants at Hampton University, and numerous students in tutoring programs. Her impact as an educator was profound, marked by high expectations, fostering lifelong relationships, and instilling a love for learning in countless students.
In February of 1973, Parthenia married Norfleet Powell Jones, and from this 50-year union, Jatauné Jones of Chesapeake and Norfleet Jerrod Jones of Hampton were born. Parthenia's grandson, Jayden Jones, brought her immeasurable joy. She is also survived by her sister, Carol Simmons; brother, Robert Simmons (Amanda Whitaker); niece, Robecca Whitaker; sister-in-law, Priscilla Walker (Clifford); and Mary Sergeon (Clifton), along with a host of family, friends, and neighbors who have been touched by her presence.
Parthenia cherished her family and friends, finding pride and joy in their company. As a loving friend to all, she delighted in hosting family events, celebrating her family and friends, organizing vacations, going for rides, and solving crossword and Sudoku puzzles. She possessed a keen enthusiasm for reading books and took pleasure in staying current with the latest releases.
A proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, Parthenia was initiated into the Newport News Alumnae Chapter 51 years ago. Committed to serving and uplifting others, her legacy lives on through the lives she touched, the lessons she shared, and the love she bestowed upon others.
