Obituary

It is with profound sadness yet deep gratitude for a well-lived life that we announce the passing of Otis Squires, Jr., a beloved Father, Grandfather, Great-grandfather, and Great-Great Grandfather, who departed this world peacefully at his home on June 28, 2026, at the age of 87.

Otis was born on August 25, 1938, in Bayboro, North Carolina, to Otis Squires Sr. and Annie Squires.  He was a man of exceptional character, known for his unwavering dedication to his family, his faith, and his country.  His early life was marked by the values of hard work and integrity, traits that he carried throughout his life.

In 1958, Otis answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Air Force.  Over a distinguished 28-year career, he rose to the rank of Senior Master Sergeant, specializing in Aircraft Maintenance and serving in various leadership positions.  His devotion to duty and his exemplary service earned him respect and admiration from all who served alongside him.  Even after retiring from the Air Force, his passion for aviation continued as he worked as an Airplane Maintenance Technician for US Airways.

Beyond his military and professional achievements, Otis was a devoted family man.  He shared a blessed 62-year marriage with his cherished wife, Ruth Squires, until her passing in 2020.  Together, they built a life filled with love and warmth, raising four wonderful children: Michelle Brooks (Larry), Maurice Squires (Deborah), Kimberly Jones, and Veronica Squires (Michael).  His legacy continues through his children, his 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, all of whom he adored and who brought immense joy to his life.  He was predeceased by his dear wife Ruth and his siblings Alberta, Perrelia, Ulysses (Grant), Ann, Edward, Louise, Simon Matthew, and Irene, as well as his grandsons Jermel and Tyron.

Otis had a remarkable love for learning, particularly when it came to military history.  He spent countless hours watching documentaries, with a special interest in Desert Storm, a testament to his lifelong commitment to understanding and honoring the sacrifices of those who served.

He was a cherished member of the Mercy Seat Baptist Church in Hampton, Virginia, where he served as a Deacon and found solace and community.  His faith in God was a guiding light in his life, providing him with strength and comfort through life's challenges and triumphs.

Otis is survived by his brother James Squires (Helen) and Fred Squires, who will carry forward his legacy of kindness and strength.  His grandchildren; Arresha Giddens (Christopher), Brandi Squires, Nakesha Squires, Demetri Squires (Carmen), Steffan Jones, Leshae Brooks, Julian Jones, Jamaree Squires, Dominic Brooks, and Dontrae Brooks along with his great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchild, will continue to honor his memory through their lives.

Viewing will be held from 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, 2026 at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel.  A service in celebration of Otis's life will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 15, 2026 at Miracle Temple Baptist Church located at 617 32nd Street, Newport News, Virginia.  Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Otis are warmly invited to attend and commemorate the extraordinary life of a man who was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed.

Otis Squires Jr.'s legacy is one of love, service, and unwavering dedication.  His spirit will continue to inspire all who knew him, and his memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of his family and friends.
