Obituary

Mr. Nelson Barber departed this life on 5/27/2026, in Hampton VA.  Nelson was born on April 19, 1939, in Elizabeth County (Now Hampton), VA to the late Benjamin Barber and Alice E. Beens Barber. Nelson accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized and became a lifelong member of Ebenezer Baptist Church for 75 plus years.  Nelson attended Phenix High School and later joined the U.S Army and served 3 years during the Cuban Crisis, and the Vietnam War with an honorable discharge. During his military service he received the Good Conduct Medal.

After his service in the United States Army, he was employed with the United States Postal Service for 33 years and retired.

Nelson loved and enjoyed his family.  He married Willie Mae Pittman, and they were married for 45 years until her death. Nelson attended Thomas Nelson Community College (Now Virginia Peninsula Community College)

Nelson is preceded in death by his wife: Willie Mae Pittman Barber.  His parents: Benjamin and Alice Barber.  His brothers: Alfred Barber, Lawrence Barber, and Oscar Leon Barber.  His sisters: Kathaleen B. Banks and Mildred B. Jordan.

Nelson Barber is survived by two children: Wanda Barber, Teresa Barber Stepdaughters: Sharon Ford Davis, Ann Pittman Kindred (Virgil)

Grandchildren: Lakita Barber, Shardae Barber, Keith Barber, Tenequa Barber.  Great grandchildren: Bryonna Knox, Bryant Knox, Roosevelt Fox IV, Tia Fox, Teyana Fox, Keith Barber Jr., Kinsley Barber.

Sisters: Lucile B. Winder, Julia Williams (Marvin) and brother: Ernest Barber, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and sister-in-law Jeanette Whitaker.

Viewing will be held from 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, 2026 at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel.  A Celebration of Life service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 4, 2026 at Ebenezer Baptist Church.  Interment will be in Ebenezer Baptist Church cemetery.
