Naomi C. Massenburg, age 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at Sentara CarePlex Hospital in Hampton, Virginia.

Naomi was born on September 20, 1933, in Franklin County, North Carolina, to the late Cornelious and Louise Clifton.  She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Shelley Massenburg; two sons, Bruce and Richard Massenburg; one daughter, Gwendolyn Jones; four brothers, Cornelious “CH” Clifton Jr., Lonnie Clifton Sr., Theodore Clifton, and Sylvester "Snowball" Clifton; and one sister, Gladys Mayes.

At an early age, Naomi accepted Christ and became a member of Saints' Delight United Church of Christ.  She later married her high school sweetheart, Shelley Massenburg.  Their loving union was blessed with four children: Bruce, Richard, Judith, and Gwendolyn.

In 1954, Naomi and her family relocated to Newport News, Virginia, before settling in Hampton, Virginia, in 1961.  That same year, she joined Zion Baptist Church, following her husband's membership.  A faithful and dedicated servant, Naomi sang in the choir, served as a Gleaner and Deaconess, and taught Sunday School.  Her unwavering faith and commitment to her church family were evident throughout her life.

Naomi's strong work ethic was reflected in her professional life.  She began her career cleaning homes before accepting a position in the cafeteria at George Wythe Junior High School with Hampton City Public Schools.  Determined to further her education, she earned her Paraprofessional Certificate from Thomas Nelson Community College and continued serving Hampton City Public Schools as a teacher's assistant.  Her final assignment was at Jefferson Davis Junior High School.  After many years of dedicated service, Naomi retired in 1998.

Retirement brought Naomi great joy, as she often said she was happy that she never had to work anymore.  She cherished spending time with friends, especially enjoying occasional lunches with her former co-workers, Christine and Ruby, at various local restaurants. Naomi had a warm and welcoming spirit that made others feel comfortable in her presence.  She was easy to talk to, quick to listen, and deeply loved by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Naomi's legacy of faith, kindness, dedication, and love for family and friends will forever remain in the hearts of those she leaves behind. Naomi leaves to cherish her precious memories her loving daughter, Judith Massenburg Patterson of Williamsburg, Virginia; her son-in-law, William Jones of Hampton, Virginia; six grandchildren, DeWayne (Michelle), Monica, Kimberly (Kevin), Keith II, Keinesha, and Shelley "Mook"; ten great-grandchildren, Jocelynn, Jayvon, Deionte, Genesis, Kendall, Jermon, Daesha, Micah, Keion, and Noah; two great-great-grandchildren, Janya and Jasiah; one sister, Julia Perry of Hillside, New Jersey; one step-grandson, RaJaee; three step-great-grandsons, RaJaee Jr., Isaiah, and Messiah; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.

Viewing will be held from 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 11, 2026 at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel. A Celebration of Life service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 12, 2026 at Zion Baptist Church in Newport News. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens.
