Obituary

Missionary Sylvia L. Rainey, "Lashaun" , passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 28, 2024.  She was born July 30, 1963 in Phoenix City, Alabama to Mother Mittie Womack and the late Bobby Butler.

She attended the Newport News Public School system.  She gave her life to Christ at an early age.  She was raised up at Zion of Joy Church of Deliverance, under the leadership of the late Overseer Mable R. Hargrove, to whom united her in holy matrimony to the love of her life, Minister Mark Rainey on September 12, 1982.

She was employed at Hampton General Hospital for over 15 years.  Then she started doing Home Health Care.  She loved the elderly and taking care of people and doing what she can for others.  She also became an entrepreneur by opening up "Sarah's Arms Adult Home Care" . She was currently a member of Temple of Praise Ministries, under the leadership of Dr. Gerald Pierce, where she served as a Missionary.   She will be missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her father, Bobby Butler, Sr.; her step-father, Pastor Sampson Womack; her son, BJ Barren Cowles; her sister, Donyound Debreaux; and her brother-in-law, Wilford J. Byrd, Sr.

She leaves to cherish her loving memory, her loving and devoted husband, Minister Mark Rainey; her children, Zikya Harris and Taurice Pope (Briah); her mother, Mother Mittie Womack; her brother, Bobby Butler, Jr. (Hydelia); her sister, Vicky Byrd; her in-laws, Quinten Rainey (Tina), Timothy Rainey, Anthony Rainey, John Rainey, Rosalind Warren (Marc); her aunts, Pauline Long, Rosa Lee and Gloria Wooten Ringer; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.

Viewing will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Friday, January 10, 2025 at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel.  A Celebration of Life service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 11, 2025 at Zion Baptist Church, 633-20th Street, Newport News, Virginia.  The Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens, 155 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, Va. 23666.
