Obituary

Minister Doris Mae Small was born on April 15, 1943, in Enfield, North Carolina, to the late William Arthur Harvey and Selma Doris Harvey. As the second of their children, Doris grew up grounded in faith, family, and resilience.  On February 12, 2026, she peacefully received her heavenly rest, surrounded by her loved ones.

Doris attended Eastman High School in Enfield, North Carolina, where she earned her GED.  She gave her life to God, at an early age, beginning a lifelong walk of faith that shaped her purpose and calling.

Doris relocated to New York, where she built a dedicated career with Blue Cross and Blue Shield Insurance Company.  Through years of faithful service and hard work, she retired with pride, and returned to North Carolina with her beloved husband, Dennis Small.  It was there that she continued to deepen her spiritual journey.  Answering her call to ministry, she enrolled at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina, where she pursued and earned her degree in divinity.  On February 2, 1986, she was ordained as a minister, affirming her unwavering devotion to preaching and teaching the Word of God.  She later moved to Virginia where she was a faithful member of the House of prayer Church of Deliverance where she ministered and attended bible study and Sunday school. Ministry was not just a title for Doris, it was her passion, her purpose, and her life's work.

Doris was preceded in death by her loving husband, Dennis Small; her son, George E. Harvey; her sister, Carolyn Harvey-Silas; her brother, William A. Harvey; and her godson, Darrin Harvey-Lynch.

She leaves to cherish her precious memory, 4 grandchildren; Dewayne Romero, Wayne Braxton, Antwan Braxton, and Elsie Braxton, and 8 Great grandchildren; Anna Romero Namiyah Romero, Dwayne Romero Jr. Messiah Braxton, Trinity Braxton, Jayden Braxton, Quanisha Braxton and Jayquan Braxton. Her brother James Harvey (Gussie), her sisters Mattie Banks (Stanley), Wilhelmina Hill (Robert), Brenda Williams (Robert), a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, church family and a legacy of faith, strength, and love that will continue to live on through all who were blessed to know her.
