d. Jul 12, 2024
Maudie Ann Thompson Stith
"What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him" 1 Corinthians 2:9.
"Early one third Sunday morning in November in Nash County, North Carolina a little seven lbs. girl was born/ Being the fourteenth child born they were running out of names. However, they decided to name her after her Mom Maudie Ann. Later in life they decided to call her Ann." From Ann's notes
Mrs. Maudie Ann Thompson Stith is the youngest of fourteen children born to Deacon Samuel and Deaconess Maudie Hilliard Thompson. She was baptized at twelve when she joined Saint John Missionary Baptist Church in Red Oak, North Carolina.
Maudie Ann attended Rocky Land Elementary School where she blossomed into a bright young lady. She graduated from Swift Creek High School where she led her basketball team to many victories. In 1960, she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary from Shaw University, Raleigh, North Carolina.
Ann and Pompey were resolute members of the First Baptist Church of Hampton where they shared their many talents in fulfilling the goals of missions. For years Ann served on the Senior Usher Ministry, Senior Church Aid Club, and the Auxiliary to the Deacons.
Tar River Elementary was the beginning of her teaching career and the beginning of life with "her everlasting Love" Pompey Laster Stith. Maudie Ann and Pompey were married on June 3, 1967, and moved to Newport News to accept positions in the school system.
Ann was an inspired teacher and mentor at Walter Reed Elementary, Riverside Elementary, Hidenwood Elementary, and Carver Elementary. In 1994, Ann was named "Teacher of the Year".
She was chosen to receive an EPDA Fellowship. In May 1971, Ann resigned from Walter Reed Elementary School to complete her Masters work at Hampton University.
Ann made her decision and retired from "her classroom" in 2000.
Soror Maudie Ann was initiated on April 28, 1985, into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated. And she is a member of The Peninsula League of Women, Inc., the YWCA, and the Newport News Educators Association.
Our Aunt always set the bar high for us. She encouraged each one to "love and appreciate your family, press toward your goals, grow your faith, apologize when you know that you should, and help and support others. " Aunt Ann and Uncle Pompey loved each other. Throughout his "trials" he was assured that his angel was ever present. Through the good times and the rough times, they set the example of how to love.
Ann is remembered by her family, her First Baptist Family, her Delta Sisters, her colleagues, and her students A few shared thoughts:
"She has definitely written the book on sophistication."
"She spread such positive energy."
"Her gifts of stylishness, her infectious smile, and her spontaneous laugher."
"All of her life Ann showed people love and how to love."
Nieces and nephews were always most special to Aunt Maudie Ann

1 Corinthians 13: 13
Psalm 139
1 You have searched me, LORD, and you know me.
7 Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?
8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.
23 Search me, God, and know my heart; me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me and lead me in the way everlasting.
