Maude Lee
Hills
d. Oct 16, 2025
God has called another one of His children home. After a long battle with Alzheimer's, Maude Lee Scott is at peace. Maude, age 88, was born to the late Elizabeth Scott and Larry McKenzie. Maude was born on April 26, 1937, in Harlem, New York.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Elizabeth Scott; father, Larry McKenzie; daughter, Linda Neville (Albert); and son, Marcus Roper. Maude, fondly called "Woodsie," was an only child. She was educated in the New York City School System. She loved the Lord. She was a true woman of God. Growing up in Harlem as a child, she had lots of cousins; her male cousins were especially protective of her.
She was a family person, and it was important to her to stay in contact with family. Her closest cousin/brother, Woody, was very protective of her, as she was of him. His Tootsie Doll, as he called her, couldn't do any wrong in his eyes.
Woodsie was a pillar in every community she lived in, from Harlem to the Bronx. She took care of all the people. She didn't judge you, but she definitely spoke wisdom to you, fed you, clothed you, and took some of you in.
She loved to shop and play bingo. She loved to dance-no matter where she'd go, if there was music, she would dance; she would tap her hands on her leg. Woodsie was loved and respected by everyone who knew her. In the neighborhood, she was known as Mama Roper. She not only had unconditional love for her family but for her friends as well. She loved life, loved to write poetry, and boy, was she funny! She taught her children so much about life. Woodsie and her former husband, Marcus, were blessed to have 11 children. Although she had 11 of her own, she found room in her heart to adopt four more. Being an only child, she said it was lonely and told us never to have just one child.
She leaves to carry her legacy and cherish her memories: seven daughters, Marcella Grissam (Wilbur), Patricia Roper Robinson (Alfred), Diana Parris (Robert), Lugenia "Dina" Allen (Randy), Mary Roper Lee (Derrick), Lisa Roper Lane (Michael), and Brenda Cruz; and two sons, Larry Roper (Courtney) and Michael Roper; two stepsons, Cornell Roper and Mark Harris; and three adopted daughters, Sharlene Briggs, Ouida Briggs, and Tara Canon. She also leaves to miss her and continue to love her: 30 grandchildren, 41 great-grands, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whom she loved dearly.
