The Honorable Mary R. Davis, a beloved matriarch, was born on June 14, 1936, in Carthage, North Carolina, to the late Mary “Jock” Ruby Stallings and Lacey Hussey.Mary peacefully transitioned on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at her home in Capital Heights, Maryland, surrounded by the love of those who cherished her most.Mary received her early education in North Carolina and later attended Huntington High School in Newport News, Virginia. She carried with her the values of strength, resilience, and grace throughout her life. Her lifelong dream was to become a teacher—one she fulfilled in spirit through the wisdom, guidance, and life lessons she poured into everyone she encountered.
In 1954, Mary was united in marriage to Harvey Lee Davis Sr. From this union, five children were born, and through them, her legacy continued to grow and flourish across generations. She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior early in life and was baptized on August 16, 2016 at First Baptist Church of Highland Park, where she remained a faithful member. Mary was deeply engaged in civic and political life. She was a powerful force behind the scenes, playing a pivotal role in supporting and helping to elect high-profile and prominent political leaders throughout her community—some of whom went on to serve at the national level, including in the United States Congress. Her influence, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to community advancement left a lasting mark on the political landscape and the lives of those she served.
Each election season, she could be found—faithful and determined—at Highland Park Elementary School, campaigning from open to close. She instilled in her family the importance of civic duty, ensuring her children and grandchildren were equipped with both a voter registration card and a high school diploma by the age of 18.She also served faithfully as a member of the Democratic Central Committee and was an active, committed voice within the Tri-Area Civic Association, where she dedicated years of service to community development and progress.In 1980, she began a long and distinguished career with the Assignment Office at the Circuit Court for Prince George’s County, Maryland, where she served with excellence for over 31 years.
Her professionalism, dedication, and strong work ethic earned her the respect and admiration of colleagues and the community alike.Mary was the nucleus of her family—the true matriarch, the heartbeat, and the source of joy for generations. “She was our covering, our foundation, and our constant. A woman of immeasurable strength and unwavering love, she helped raise and shape four generations. Her presence provided protection, her wisdom built legacies, and her love held the family together. Her life was a living example of sacrifice, resilience, and unconditional love.
”She leaves to cherish her memory her five children: Karlester “Bunnie” Davis, Sharon Denise Joyner, Harvey Lee Davis Jr., Ramon Lynn Davis Sr. (Nydia), and Ramona “Peaches” Lynette Davis; her honorary son, Larry Germaine Miller; nine grandchildren: Monique Cherrylle Van Buren, Ramon Lynn Davis Jr., Ramona LaShawn Joyner, Christopher Tyree Wallace (Shanice), Laith Douglas Shannon (Jessica), Zachary Tyler Shannon, Aleyse Lynette Shannon, Rashawnda Nicole Ellis, and Jerry Kent Smith; and eight great-grandchildren: Brandon Davis, Marshawn Carter, Mikaylee Carter, Maya Davis, Ramon Davis III, Rhys Davis, Reign Davis, and Ever Shannon; along with a host of extended family, friends, and loved ones.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Cornald Cunningham, and her sister, Lois Person.
She leaves to cherish her memory her loving brother, Douglas Person. Mary was also a beloved neighborhood mother and grandmother to the communities of Booker T and Highland Gardens. She never met a stranger, and her love extended far beyond her immediate family to the friends of her children and grandchildren—many of whom loved and respected her as their own. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her family, friends, colleagues, and all whose lives she touched. The family extends heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support during this time. Your kindness and presence mean more to us than words can express.
Viewing will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 12 Noon on Thursday, April 16, 2026 at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, 1601-27th Street, Newport News, Va. A graveside service will be follow at 1:00 p.m. at Hampton Memorial Gardens, 155 Butler Farm Road, Hampton,Va.
