Marvin Leon Sutton Sr. , born on January 10, 1955, went home to his Heavenly Father on July 7, 2025, at Sentara Heart Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia.
Marvin was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Helena Smith Sutton and George R. Sutton Sr. His family moved to Newport News, Virginia, during his early childhood years. He was raised up in the knowledge and teachings of Jesus Christ and gave his life to Christ at an early age.
He received his early childhood education in the Newport News Public School System. Marvin played sports throughout his youth, achieving many recognitions in both basketball and track. He graduated from Menchville High School in 1973. He worked as a Psychiatric Technician at Eastern State Hospital for 5 years. He served in the United States Army Reserves for 14 years, where he obtained his license as a Practical Nurse (LPN). He served at the Hampton VA Medical Center as an LPN for 17 years before retiring in February of 2025.
He was a devoted member and Deacon at Salvation and Deliverance Ministries (renamed to New Beginnings) for 20+ years. Marvin was the backbone of his household and loved his family dearly.
Marvin was an avid fisherman, where he found solace.
He was preceded in death by a brother Norman I. Sutton, and his parents Helena S. Sutton and George R. Sutton Sr.
He leaves to cherish sweet memories of his life and legacy, a wife of 35 years Bridgette Thompson Sutton, two sons, Jammal N. Sutton, and Marvin L. Sutton, Jr. and one daughter Chantelle D. Sutton, four siblings Adrian V. Sutton (Cheryl), George R. Sutton Jr. (Florence), Rodney Sutton (Sheila), Arvis S. Williams (Robert), his mother-in-love Virginia Thompson, a brother-in-love Raynell Thompson, a sister-in-love Vernell Thompson, seven nephews, two nieces, and a plethora of cousins, extended family members, friends, and former colleagues.
Marvin was a light everywhere he went, with his beautiful smile and compassionate spirit. He truly embodied the love of Christ. He will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched.
Viewing will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the Celebration of Life service starting at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2025 at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in Hampton Memorial Gardens.
