Obituary

We gather today to celebrate and honor the life of Marion G. Johnson — a woman small in stature but mighty in love, faith, and wisdom.

Marion was born on March 13, 1936, in Seaboard, North Carolina. From an early age, her gentle spirit and strong determination were evident to all who knew her. She pursued her education at Huntington High School in Newport News, Virginia, graduating in 1957, where she concentrated on accounting — a field she loved and continued to pursue at Peninsula Business College with a focus on accounting before entering the workforce.

On May 3, 1961, she married the love of her life, Wesley Lee Johnson. Together, they built a life rooted in faith, hard work, and deep devotion to family. Their marriage stood strong until Wesley's passing in 2009.

Marion was a woman of quiet strength and unwavering faith. She was a true prayer warrior, an avid Bible reader, and a lifelong student of God's Word. Her favorite scripture, Psalm 30:5, reminded her — and all of us — that "weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning."

She found joy in life's simple pleasures — reading, solving crossword puzzles, and completing super-sized jigsaw puzzles that challenged her sharp mind and patience.

Marion also possessed a rare and beautiful gift: she was a forthright truth-teller. She had a special way of saying difficult or awkward things with grace, love, and wisdom. Her honesty, always wrapped in compassion, helped shape the lives of those around her and strengthened the bonds of family and friendship.

Her legacy lives on through her three beloved sons — Wesley A. Johnson (daughter-in-law, Dionne), Steven E. Johnson, and Marc O. Johnson. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Marcus Johnson, Jai Randolph, Asante Johnson, Omari Johnson, Ayinde Johnson, Dara Johnson, Kemondie McMillian, Marquis Hunter and Markell Hunter; and great-grandmother to little Bella.

She also leaves behind her dear sisters, Bernice Alston of Newport News, Virginia, and Barbara Story of Cleveland, Ohio, along with a host of nieces, nephew's, great-nieces, and great-nephews, all of whom she loved deeply and prayed for often.

She was a second mother to many, especially Monique Johnson and Felicia Hunter, who where like daughters to her.

Marion's life was a living testimony to the power of love, honesty, faith, and wisdom. Though her frame was small, the impact she made on her family and all who knew her was — and continues to be — immeasurable.

Today, even as we grieve, we also give thanks. We are grateful for the gift of her life, the memories we cherish, and the example she set. And we find comfort in knowing that her joy is now complete in the presence of the Lord she loved so dearly.

"Well done, good and faithful servant. We love you, and we will carry your love, your truth, and your lessons in our hearts forever."
