Obituary

Lucy Marie Whitney Williams, 99, of Hampton, VA, passed away peacefully at home on October 31, 2023.

Born on July 21, 1924, in Sedley, Virginia to the late Johnny Whitney and Lucy Davis Whitney, Lucy, often referred to as "Sis", was the seventh eldest of thirteen siblings. She received her early childhood education at Hill School, a one room schoolhouse in Sedley,
Virginia. She started high school at Hayden High School in Franklin, Virginia and graduated from Southampton County Training School.

Lucy "Sis", was the mother of four children and served as a second mom, aunt and caregiver to many others. Wearing many hats in her roles as a mother, partner, sister, caregiver, provider, teacher and friend; she still found time to work part time as a Cafeteria Manager for many years. She was a natural baby whisperer with self-taught cooking and baking skills that outmatched many professionally trained chefs. A true giver and innate nurturer everyone could always count on her in their time of need. No person she knew ever went hungry on her watch. Without ever being asked, she often made and delivered meals to others simply because she somehow just knew they needed it. Similarly, without being asked or wanting anything in return, she would frequently offer and provide rides to church or appointments.

Lucy's initial church home was Zion Southampton AME Zion and then Christian Union Church in Newport News, Virginia. She ultimately joined Greater Walters AME Zion Church in Newport News, Virginia under the leadership of Reverend Littlejohn, where she was a member of Usher Board Number 2, a class leader and a member of the hospitality committee. She was always available and willing to assist her church family in
any way possible.

In her 99 years, Lucy became a legacy as a pillar of the community and an example of what it means to be a Godly woman. Lucy loved her family and cherished her friends. Her fighting spirit, fierce love, and tender concern for those around her will be dearly missed.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Cheryl Williams-Clements; six brothers, John Whitney, James "Kenney" Whitney, Clarence Whitney, Joseph Whitney, Albert "Sidney" Whitney, Clyde Whitney; three sisters, Claudia Artis, Blanch Edley and Dolly Hicks; and former husband and longtime friend, Clyde Williams. She is already tremendously missed by her surviving family, including her two daughters, Jacqueline Jordan (Harold) and Sonja Williams-Graves (Anthony); son, Willie Whitney (Angela); two sisters, Joyce Winfield and Louise Conley; brother Marvin Whitney (Jurline); sister in-law Bea Whitney; and a host of beloved relatives including her grandchildren: Keith Whitney (Katie), Whitney Jordan Rosier (Christopher), Mackenzie Jordan Johnson (Josiah),Patrick Whitney, Jeri Williams Lawson (Justin), Anthony Graves Jr., Michael Clements,
Nikalas Graves, great-grandchildren, in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and church family.

A celebration of life will be held at Greater Walters AME Zion Church in Newport News, VA on Monday, November 6th at 12:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer's Association in her name.
