Obituary

LaVerne was born on July 20, 1954, at Whitaker Memorial Hospital in Newport News, Virginia to the late Rev. H.C. Cobb and the late Ethel Morgan Cobb.  She departed this life peacefully at her home on November 3, 2025.  At an early age, she joined Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. M. Ivory Jefferson alongside her parents and siblings.  She later joined First United Baptist Church, where she served diligently in ministry.  God saw fit to call her to Coastal Church in Hampton, VA, where she served faithfully and became a student of the Word of God until her passing.

LaVerne graduated from Hampton High School in 1972.  She was later enrolled in The Riverside School of Nursing, where she received her RN degree.  She worked as a Registered Nurse in the Emergency Room/Trauma Center at Hampton General Hospital. Later, she worked at Sentara Hospital and eventually joined Virginia Health Services (VHS), where she first served as the Director of Nursing.  She was later promoted to a corporate position, overseeing multiple facilities for VHS.  She worked diligently and faithfully until her retirement on December 18, 2020, after 20 years of dedicated service.

LaVerne was such a compassionate, caring person.  She was affectionately known as "The Boss Lady."  Everyone knew they could count on her to organize the family events, church events, and small group walks for the annual Breast Cancer walks held in the city.  She always listened to others intently and provided words of wisdom, comfort, and joy.  She became the "rock" of the family.  She never let us forget who the "Solid Rock", Jesus Christ, should be in all of our lives.  She was truly devoted to the family. She was always found ministering and encouraging others to live their best life.  If there was a need she could help meet, she gave with compassion and love.  She was a great caregiver to her parents, Grandmother, and many other older relatives who could no longer care for themselves.  Always reaching out to help others in times of need. LaVerne had many adopted nieces, nephews, and sons and daughters.  She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, "Gigi", "Big Sis", Auntie, cousin, "Sister-cousin", and friend.

Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her husband of 43 years, Richard C. Maynard, Son, Martinez Antonio Cobb, Granddaughter, Diamond Nicole Griffith (Tajh), Great-Granddaughter, Jade Nyomi Eason, Brother, Rudy S. Cobb (Gayle) of Oklahoma, and Sister, Rita D.
