Obituary

Julian Roosevelt Williams, Sr. was born in Skippers, Virginia on July 5, 1939 to Henry Williams and Annie D. Taylor.  He passed away Sunday, October 6, 2024 at Sentara Careplex Hospital in Hampton, Virginia. The youngest son of his mother's children, Julian loved her cooking and was sometimes called Biscuit because of the love of his mother's homemade biscuits.

Julian attended Edward W. Wyatt High School where he was often described as a shy and quiet gentleman. Truly a man of few words he was an avid researcher with a thirst for knowledge.  When he wasn't working on the family farmland, he would often spend his days in the library, researching various topics and particularly law.

He was a God-fearing Christian, devoted to God and his faith.  Julian was a member of Antioch Baptist Church where he was baptized at the age of eighteen.

In addition to being an avid learner and devout Christian, Julian was a lover of puzzles and logic games.  From an early age Julian became a phenomenal checkers player, beating anyone who dared to play him.  In his later years he added new games such as Sudoku and Solitaire to his gamming repertoire.  Julian was a firm believer in higher education and he had a strong work ethic.  It was common for him to say to his children, "get your lesson." As the youngest son and the last of his father's twenty children to leave home, he was the sole care taker of the family's 60-acre farmland.  Despite the arduous work he'd often say, "if my daddy would've bought me a tractor, I would've never left Emporia".

In 1961, Julian moved to Newport News, VA where he worked several odd jobs to include Longshoreman, Security Guard, and Ice Cream Truck Driver for Rich's Supermarket.  On September 11, 1962 he secured a job with Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock as a Pipe Fitter.  Julian worked at Newport News Shipbuilding for forty years before retiring in 2002.  A longtime patron and member of the Our World Club on G St.in Newport News, Julian was a competitive Spades and Bid whist player who won many trophies.  He was also known to be an ardent pool player.

On October 6, 2024, God called Julian "Juppy" Williams Sr. home into an eternal life of peace with Him in heaven.  He was preceded in death by his mother, father and seventeen siblings.  He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving and devoted wife, Easter; children, Kim (Michael), Teressa, Julian Jr. "Jay" (Nancy), Acorey (Veronica), and Malindia (James); twelve grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two sisters, Sadie Noble and Hattie Powell (Rudolph); six sisters-in-law, and one brother-in-law, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family "Willnew Drive Crew" and friends.

Julian truly was an extraordinary husband, father, granddad, uncle, and man.  He lit up the room with his gentle smile, kind words of encouragement, humorous wit, and generosity!  He enjoyed dancing to music, giving out dollar bills to little children, and taking daily walks around the block in his neighborhood.

Julian, Juppy, JR, Daddy, Dad, Grandad, Uncle, Paw Paw, you will be missed!
