Obituary

Mr. Joseph "Joe" Lewis Hawkins age 87, of Hampton, Virginia, departed this life on Sunday, October 1, 2023, at Hampton VA Medical Center. He was born on October 21, 1935, in Lawrenceville, Virginia to the late Osborne L. and Emma S. Hawkins.

Joe received his education in the Brunswick County Public School System. After serving honorably in the US Air Force for 2 years, he retired in May 1993 from Fort Monroe, Hampton, Virginia after 39 years of dedicated civil service.

He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior many years ago and was baptized at Popular Mount Baptist Church, Lawrenceville, VA. He attended Carver Memorial Presbyterian Church, Newport News, VA for several years where he was a dedicated member.

His favorite pastimes included spending time with family, attending church activities, watching the Yankees and Redskins play.

He was preceded in death by his parents Emma Selina Manning and Osborn Lee Hawkins, wife Virginia Palmer Hawkins, brothers; James, Willie, John, Oscar, Rochelle, and Charles; and sisters; Alberta and Annie; nephews; Eugene, Andre, Michael, and Allen; niece Marion.

To cherish sweet memories of him, he leaves a dedicated special friend Shirley Cabarras (daughter-Tonya; granddaughter-Morgan; son Torri). sisters-in-law Anna and Brenda; brother-in-law Terry; nieces and nephews; Constance, Rozell, Claude, William III (Patricia), Audrei, Larry (Barbara), Brenda (James), Patricia, Norris, Charles (Dalays), Alonzo Sr., Sheila (Wyman), Jenelle (William), Carnell, Thaddeus Sr. (Angela), Nathan (Deanna), Constance Ward, Sherilyn, Glenda (Barry), and Lisa. A host of great-nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews; a host of friends and other relatives, among them, an aunt, cousins, his god children James C. Powell and Karri Julius; devoted lifetime friends; Clifton and Brenda Collins.

A special thanks to the Hampton VA Medical Center CLC staff for their caregiving and assistance provided to our family over the last 7 years, and a special thanks to the Carver Memorial Presbyterian Church family.

The family sincerely appreciate all expressions, prayers, acts of kindness, and love extended through the period of illness and bereavement.

Viewing will be held Monday, October 9, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 10, 2023 at Carver Memorial Presbyterian Church, 830-25th Street, Newport News, Va. Interment will follow in Hampton National Cemetery.
