John Thomas Barrett Jr., of Hampton, VA transitioned on Monday, August 18, 2025 at his residence. He was the late son of John Thomas Barrett Sr and Elizabeth Rawles Barrett, He will also precede in death by his two sisters Ella Louise Barrett and Ruth B, Hill.
He was born and raised in Newport News, VA, At an early age he accepted the Lord as his Lord and Savior. He attended George Washington Carver High School and graduated with the Class of 1965. After graduating from high school he was drafted into the United States Army and served in the Vietnam War. He was Honorably Discharged in 1967. In 1971, John married Brenda Mitchell and with this union they were blessed with two daughters and one son, With this union John and Brenda Barrett were married for 53 years, Even through his declining health his wife was always by his side,
He was a hardworking family man, He retired from the Newport News Shipyard after 45 years of service. He also drove taxi´s for a company formally known as White Cabs. He loved to play pool and play bingo, His past time was playing bingo at Chestnut Hall, American Legion and Hellenic Community Center, On some Saturdays he would play midnight bingo in Yorktown, He was strong minded and stern but he was a loving gentle giant, He loved his grand kids. If you ever seen John out and about he always had one of his grand kids, From picking them up or taking them to school, going to the store or the park they where the center of his heart,
He leaves to cherish his memories to his wife of 53 years, Brenda Barrett; two daughters, Leslie Barrett and Rhonda Barrett; and only son, Daniel T. Barrett. Also his sisters, Shirley Boykins (Hollis), Elizabeth Ellison (Ashford), Ruby Richmond, Linda Copeland, Catherine Rodgers (Allen Sr.) and Dorothy Reese; his only brother, Herman Barrett; and his world his grandchildren, Amir Barrett, Arianna Barrett, Boris Johnson Jr, Imani Johnson, Laila St. Kitts-Martinez and Tyler Barrett. He also leaves behind to cherish his memories his great-granddaughter, Lailani Barrett and a host of family and friends.
Viewing will be held from 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Thursday, August 28, 2025 at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel. A Celebration of Life service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 29, 2025 at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
