Obituary

Jerline Stephenson Sykes, the daughter of Dorothy Stephenson Boone (deceased) and Albert Joyner Sr. (deceased) was born March 8th,1946 in Pendleton, NC. She was reared by two loving,caring,and the greatest, Coley Guy and Hattie Vinson. (deceased)

Jerline graduated from Gumberry High School, Gumberry, NC. In 1964. During all her school years, she was known as Jerline Vinson. She married Sam Sykes in 1967,and they had two sons, Chris Antonio Sykes and Alphonso Wilson Sykes.

She retired in April, 2009 from Hampton Roads Transit after working there 29 years, and 8 months.She loved spending time with her family, helping others, bowling,bingo,casino, and cooking, she departed this life February 13. 2024.

She was preceded in death by (son) Chris Antonio Sykes, (sister) Ruth Vinson, 5 brothers: Mckelly Stephenson, Harvey Lee Vinson, Paul Vinson 2nd, Alfred McCoy Vinson, and Carl Edward Joyner.

She leaves to cherish her memories: Sam Sykes (husband), Alphonso Wilson Sykes (son)/Johnnese Jones-Sykes, Krystal Chantel Clark (granddaughter), Kyriq Alexander Johnson (grandson), Danielle Cene Wilkins (god-granddaughter), Jada Nicole Wilkins (god-granddaughter), Dorian Jahmier Rhodes (DJ) (great-god-grandson), Aydrian Rhodes (Tooda) (great-god-grandson), Skylar Royal Pearson (great-god-granddaughter), Deion Rhodes (great-god-grandson), Neco Rhodes(great-god-grandson) 5 sisters: Lucille Burnham, Washington DC, Mary Greenlee, Raleigh,NC, Jesse Roberts, Chesapeake,Va. Betty Greenlee/Ronald, Old Fort,NC, and Dianah Pearson, Old Fort,NC., 7 brothers: James Vinson, Ahoskie,NC, Bobby Gene Vinson, Washington,DC, Louis Vinson/Jean , Chesapeake,Va, Colie Stephenson/Patricia(Trish), Conway,NC, Albert Joyner/Michelle, Asheville, NC, William Joyner/Martha, Nebo, NC,. 1 Aunt Leatha Camen, NY, and a host of nieces, nephews,cousins,and friends.

Viewing will begin 9:00 am, Sunday, February 18, 2024 with funeral services beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, 1601-27th Street, Newport News, Va.  Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial  Gardens.
