Obituary

Mr. James Edward Harrell, Sr., affectionately known as "Lil Bro" and "Bible" (a nickname earned because of his honesty and truthfulness from a young age), peacefully transitioned at home surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on September 18, 1930, in Goosenest, Martin County, North Carolina, James was the beloved son of the late William Harrell, Sr. and Lilly Harrell.  He later made his home in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, before settling in Virginia, where he built a life centered on faith, family, and service.

He was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 68 years, Arnalee Sylvia Harrell, whom he loved dearly.  He was also welcomed into eternal rest by his siblings: Dora Lee, Hannah, Mary, Ruby, Willie "Fate," Samuel "Rudolph," William, Jr. "Buddy," and Gladys.

James began his spiritual journey at Greater Walter AME Church, where he was baptized.  He later became a faithful and dedicated member of Gethsemane Baptist Church, where he worshiped and served for more than 42 years.  James loved the Lord and maintained a personal relationship with Him throughout his life.  His strong Christian faith guided every aspect of his life and served as the foundation upon which he built his family.

A humble and hardworking man, James dedicated 43 years of service to the Newport News Shipbuilding Rigger Department (X36).  Following his retirement, he continued serving the community through Hampton Public Schools, where he worked as a custodian and supervisor.  He believed in helping others and became well known throughout his neighborhood for lending a hand whenever needed, whether pulling trash cans, providing transportation to appointments, or helping neighbors get to the store.

To his family, James was a man of wisdom, discipline, and unforgettable sayings.  He was the undisputed king of checkers.  If an opponent took too long to make a move, he would quickly remind them, "Your move!  Are you going to move or what?"  He possessed a sharp mind for numbers and was known for his careful stewardship of money.  If a bill arrived in the mail, chances were the payment was already written and ready to be mailed the very next day.  Being late on a payment was simply not in his nature.

James treasured family gatherings and the joy of being surrounded by those he loved.  He was a loyal Pittsburgh Steelers fan and rarely missed an opportunity to cheer for his team.  He enjoyed watching westerns and faithfully tuned in to In the Heat of the Night.  One of his favorite places was the front porch, where he could sit, reflect, and watch the world go by.

Even after he was no longer able to drive, James never lost his independent spirit.  He often talked about buying another car so he could drive to Walmart, down Mercury Boulevard, and back again.  His family would lovingly remind him otherwise, but he never stopped trying to convince someone to take him to a dealership.  That determination and sense of humor remained with him throughout his life.

James also took great pride in maintaining his yard.  His lawn was always neatly manicured and reflected the care and attention he gave to everything entrusted to him.

Above all, James loved his family.  His legacy lives on through his children: Glenda Harrell Clark; Wilbur Harrell; Septivia Harrell Wallace (Roderick); James Harrell, Jr. (Pam); Lorraine Harrell Hall (Garrett); Angela Harrell Hill (Barry); Shannon Harrell (Joyce); and Monta Harrell (Tamika).  He also leaves behind a cherished legacy through his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and countless friends whose lives were enriched by his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering love.
