Obituary

Corporal Ja'Mel Wylek DaQuan Kennedy , 25, a proud and dedicated soldier of the Virginia Army National Guard, serving with the 2nd Squadron, 183rd Cavalry Regiment, passed away on the afternoon of Saturday April 19, 2025 after a hard-fought battle with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia surrounded by family and friends.

Born on October 11, 1999 in Newport News, Virginia, he was a courageous and loyal servicemember, a loving family member, and a true friend to many. Ja'Mel lived his life with strength, integrity, and compassion, always putting others before himself and serving his country with honor.

Ja'Mel is a beautiful representation of Christ, a highly treasured son, brother, grandson, uncle, cousin, nephew, friend and battle buddy.

He is preceded in death by: Herbert Johnson Jr. (Papa); Janet Crisostomo (Grandma); Alexander Martin (Great Grandad); Edna Mae Jones (Great Grandmom); Darby and Eloise Harrison (Great Grandparents)

His memories are cherished by his parents: LaToria Kennedy (Mom); David Jones (Dad) and Jadeane Jones (Bonus Mom); Siblings: Diamond Westray (husband: Jay Westray II); Shania Jones (husband: Anthony Gibson); Jayven San Nicolas; JaSaun Walker; Aaliyah Johnson (husband: Devontae Johnson); JaMarcus Kennedy; Damien Jones; Imani Jones; Loving grandparents: Vickie Johnson; Joe Kennedy (wife: Ruthene); Terri Jones; Joseph Flores (wife: Mary Flores); And best friends: Brandon Squire; Phoebe and Olivia Bills; And a hosts of aunts, uncles, niece, cousins, friends, and battle buddies.

Corporal Kennedy, lovingly known as "Jay-J" and "Mel-Mel", was a gentle giant who will be remembered for his unwavering service, radiant spirit, and the lasting impact he left on everyone who knew him. He leaves behind memories that can be enjoyed with his infectious smile and contagious laughter with facial expressions that are indescribable.

Viewing will be held Friday, May 2, 2025 from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, 1601-27th Street, Newport News, Va. A funeral service will be held 11;00 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2025 at  Emmanuel Chapel Church of Christ, 200 Hampton Roads Avenue, Hampton, Va.with Nick Morant officiating.  Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens, 155 Butler Farm Road, Hampton,Va. 23666.
