Iona E. Pierce, "Onie Gal" , born March 20, 1950 in Roanoke Rapids, NC., to the late Willard Yellorday and Mable Lee Yellorday, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 8, 2024.

After relocating to Newport News, Virginia, she attended the Newport News Public School System, graduating from Huntington High School.  She retired from Riverside Regional Medical Center after over 25 years of dedicated service.

Iona enjoyed watching Perry Mason, Old Westerns and shopping for her two grandsons.  She enjoyed spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Earvin Yellorday, and Steve Yellorday.

She leaves to cherish her memories: her daughter, Lynette Thornton of Chester, VA.; two sisters, Louise Washington of Hampton, VA., and Dora Yellorday of Newport News, VA.; two nieces, Kathy Washington of Alexandria, VA ., and Tracy Yellorday of Highlands Ranch, CO.; a nephew, George Washington of Alexandria, VA.; and two grandsons, Trayln and Rayln Thornton of Chester, VA.; and other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held 12 Noon, Thursday, May 16, 2024 at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, 1601-27th Street, Newport News ,VA. 23607. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens, Hampton, Va.
