Obituary

On December 25, 2023, the Lord saw fit to call His daughter, Hattie B. Calm to her heavenly reward.

Hattie was born to the late James Heard and Sallie Danley in Abbyville, South Carolina in 1921.  At an early age, Hattie felt the need to accept Jesus Christ as her Saviour.  She began her Christian walk at the Wilson Creek Church and in her later years, joined the Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Temple under the leadership of the late Dr. M. Ivory Jefferson.  She is still a current member with Reverend Dr. Jerome A. Barber serving as Senior Pastor.

Hattie has served on various clubs and auxiliaries within the church, including the usher board, and the dream makers.  Many people in the community affectionately remember her as the Garage Sale lady, because she would always have sales in the neighborhood.

Hattie will truly be missed by all who knew her.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Warrem Calm; and her daughter, Benny Jean Benson; two sons, Ernest Cumming and Bernard Banks.

She leaves to cherish her memory two children, Carolyn Carson and Edward Hardy, Jr. of Hampton, Virginia; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren.  Hattie always felt that the work she's done would speak for her.  She will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.

Viewing will begin 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 6, 2024 with a funeral service starting at 12 Noon at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, 1601-27th Street, Newport News,Va. 23607. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens.
