Gregory Keith McDonald , of Suffolk, VA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 6, 2025, in the Intensive Care Unit of Sentara CarePlex Hampton, surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was 68 years old.

Greg was a talented and well-respected bass player, known throughout the Tidewater area for his performances with numerous jazz and pop musical groups. He proudly served his country for 20 years and 3 days in the United States Army, retiring with the rank of Sergeant First Class (SFC). His last duty station was at the U.S. Pentagon.

After his distinguished military career, Greg embraced new challenges. His love of people and a strong work ethic led him to manage a local Domino's Pizza. He then transitioned to Lowe's in Portsmouth, VA, where he charmed both employees and customers with his friendly personality and helpful nature. In recent years, Greg cherished the opportunity to spend quality time with his beloved grandchildren, enjoying the fruits of his labor and a life well-lived.

He is preceded in death by his father, Robert McDonald, Sr.; his mother, Mary Irene McDonald; his eldest sister, Gwenda Waller; and his younger sister, Deborah Ellenson.

Greg is survived by his three brothers: Robert McDonald Jr., Kevin McDonald Sr., and Derrick McDonald; his three children: Richard William Hamlet (Rasheedah, wife), Greta McDonald-Price, and Timothy Keith McDonald; his four grandchildren: Richean Hamlet, Dianna McDonald, Jaxson Hamlet, and McKenzie Mayo; his great-grandson, Jihad Thomas; and a host of cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

A Homegoing Service to celebrate Greg's life will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Cooke Brothers Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Newport News, VA. A final viewing will be held prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 PM. Following the service, a repast will be held at Bethany Methodist Church, located at 1509 Todds Lane, Hampton, VA. In accordance with Greg's wishes, cremation will follow.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of condolences and prayers during this difficult time.

Viewing will be held Friday, September 12, 2025 from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, 1601-27th Street, Newport News, Va. A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 13, 2025 at the funeral chapel.
