It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of George Addison Jones, affectionately known as "Butch," who departed this life peacefully in his sleep on May 14, 2026, at the age of 82. Born on December 8, 1943, in Newport News, Virginia, Butch was a beacon of light, joy, and love to all who knew him.Butch was the cherished son of the late Naomi H. Jones and James W. Jones Sr. He was also predeceased by his beloved brothers, Ernest "Bobby" Bell and James W. Jones Jr. Despite these losses, Butch's life was filled with the warmth and companionship of his surviving family, including his devoted wife of 44 years, Joyce Anita Jones (Brown). Married on September 29, 1981, in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, Butch and Joyce shared an incredible journey, raising four remarkable children and creating a home filled with laughter and love.Butch is survived by his sisters, Cordell Trotman (Richard) and Kitty Jones Sharif, both of New Jersey, and his children, Tammy D. Castille of Norfolk; Ronald N. Robinson and Gwendolyn J. Brown (Christianne) of Williamsburg; Marcus D. Brown (Paula) of Suffolk; Vondrenna Martino (Ralph) of Maryland; Scott McLeod (Victoria) of California; and Keven McLeod (Arlena) of North Carolina.

He was also the adored grandfather to a host of grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews who will continue to cherish his memory. A proud alumnus of Huntington High School, Butch served his country honorably as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He later dedicated 36 years of his professional life to Belt Line Railroad in Portsmouth, Virginia, where he broke barriers as their first African American Railroad Engineer. His commitment to excellence and safety earned him numerous accolades and the respect of his colleagues.

Butch was a man of many passions. He was an avid fisherman, often found casting lines from his home by the water's edge, and a golf enthusiast who enjoyed the game both on the course and from the comfort of his living room. He had a love for the outdoors and spent countless hours working in his yard and on various home projects.For over 23 years, Butch was an active member of the Churchland Assembly of God, where he found joy in fellowship and service. He supported various events of the American Legion Social Club in Newport News.Those who knew Butch will remember his quick wit, infectious humor, and the way he made everyone feel valued and welcome. His ability to lighten the mood with a well-timed joke left a lasting impression on all who crossed his path.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Sentara OBICI Hospital for their compassionate care during Butch's final days. As we say goodbye to Butch, we hold onto the memories and the legacy he leaves behind. He will be "Forever in our hearts," a testament to a life well-lived and a love that will never fade.

Viewing will be held Wednesday, May 20, 2026 from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, 1601-27th Street, Newport News, Va. A service honoring Butch's life will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 21, 2026 at Churchland Assembly of God, 4209 Twin Pines Road, Portsmouth, VA . Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Newport News, Va.
