Obituary

It is with deep love and sorrow that we announce the passing of Geneva Lynette Wharton, who entered this world on November 19, 1962, and departed peacefully on September 26, 2025. She was preceded in death by parents Paul and Paulette Wharton, maternal grandparents Julian and Virginia McClenney, paternal grandparents Harvey Wharton and Clara Jenkins, and her beloved son Dominique Antoine Wharton. Geneva was a member of First Baptist Church East End all her life and served on the Homeless Ministry.

She grew up in Newsome Park and was a member of the Community Drill team. She loved her family and expressed that love through her cooking. She loved old school music - especially Chaka Khan - and old gospel spirituals. She was the life of the party, and made everyone feel welcome.

She is survived by former husband Ronnie Carter and their children: Ronald Wharton (Demetrice), Terrance Wharton (Debbie), and Dana Wharton, her sister Paula Sanders (Allen) and her brothers: Paul Wharton, Tony Wharton (Nichelle), and Todd Wharton (Candice). A very special friend Gary Manley. Nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. Her strength, kindness, and unwavering love will continue to inspire those she leaves behind. Though our hearts ache, we rejoice in knowing Geneva is reunited and with her loved ones in eternal peace.

Viewing will be held Wednesday, October 8, 2025 at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, 1601-27th Street, Newport News, Va. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 9, 2025 at First Baptist Church East End, 3000 Jefferson Avenue, Newport News, Va. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
