• Frederick “Freddie,” Howard Swilling, entered the presence of the Lord

  Jesus Christ on April 24, 2026. He was born on September 7, 1960, in

  Newport News, VA, to Pearlie Mae Swilling and the late Louis Swilling.

  Freddie grew up in Newport News, VA, and graduated from Warwick

  High School in 1978. He later attended Virginia Peninsula Community

  College, where he received a certificate in Refrigeration and Air

  Conditioning.

  Freddie then began his career at Hampton University in the Vehicle

  Services department. He worked as the administrative driver for

  President Emeritus Dr. William R. Harvey and the current President of

  Hampton University, Darryl Williams, for over 30 years. Freddie served

  the University with dedication and excellence and was a member of the

  Hampton University Quarter Century Club since 2016.

  Freddie loved spending time with his family as well as watching sports

  and playing cards. He has always been a kind, loving, respectful, and

  caring person; most recently, he rededicated his life back to the Lord

  Jesus Christ. We witnessed a great transformation in Freddie’s life as he

  continued to worship the Lord Jesus Christ up until the day, he departed

  this earth and went home.

  Freddie was preceded in death by his father, Louis Swilling, Sr.; and

  siblings, Stephen Swilling, Vincent Swilling, Louis Swilling, Jr., Michael

  Swilling, Mary Ann Houston, and Joan Fullwood.

  He leaves to cherish his precious memory, his loving wife Lillian (Lynn)

  Swilling; their only child, Kenya Swilling; his mother Pearlie Mae

  Swilling; siblings: Rebecca Johnson, Brenda Hicks (Bill), Shirley Johnson

  (Tony), Annette Nelson (Frank), Angeleah Jones (Joe}, and Linwood

  Swilling; a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

  It has been such an honor and privilege to have known and loved

  Frederick Howard Swilling.

Viewing will be held Sunday, May 3, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, 1601-27th Street, Newport News, Va. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 4, 2026 at Immanuel Fellowship Church 5862 Orcutt Avenue, Newport News, Va. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens.
