Obituary

Mrs. Evelyn Cooper-Corbin, entered eternal rest on Sunday, June 22, 2025.

Evelyn, affectionately known as Piggy and Ms. Fe Fe by family, was born the third of eleven children on January 17, 1940, to the late Javie and Mary McIntyre.  She is a 1958 graduate of Huntington High School, Newport News, VA.  The same year she married Paul Cooper after graduation.

During a Nursing shortage in the late 1970's, Ms. Fe Fe was selected as a student to attend a paid Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) training program sponsored by the Veterans Health Administration.  During her study, she requested to observe an autopsy.  Her request was granted although it was rarely approved for nursing students.  She worked as an LPN for Whitaker Memorial Hospital and retired from the Hampton VA Hospital after 33 years assigned to the spinal cord unit in 2011.  She loved working with her patients whom she often referred to as "her boys."  They would not take shots without her.

She had a close relationship with her sister Barbara Mayo.  The two were inseparable until Barbara's death in 2018.  Ms. Fe Fe was the bonus mother to Barbara's children Annie, JoJo, Johanna and James, and grandmother to Brandae, Jovon, and Jahnna.  She was quiet and always friendly.  She and her neighbor and best friend from high school Catherine Bowens, aka "Cat," remained close.

Ms. Fe Fe was a lifelong member of Providence Baptist Church, Newport News, VA, having served on the Usher Board, Deaconess Board and Nurses Board, where she remained active until her health failed.  Since retirement, she lived life easy, enjoying time with family and friends and baking her famous cakes.  She married Charles Preston Corbin Jr. on January 15, 2014.  If asked about her legacy she would say "May the work I've done speak for me."

Awaiting her arrival are her parents Javie and Mary McIntyre, her bonus daughters Barbara "Annie" Mayo Falices and Evelyn "JoJo" Mayo; siblings Walter McEntyre, Barbara Mayo, and Mary Jane Gatling.

Left to treasure her loving memory are her husband Charles P. Corbin Jr.; bonus children Johanna Brown and James Mayo; step-children Corrin Corbin and Charles Gregory Corbin; bonus grandchildren Brandae Mayo, Jovon Brown and Jahnna Brown; siblings Delores Gatling (Robert), Gloria Keene (William), Sadie Johnson, Ruby Betts (Trent), David McIntyre (Angela), Carolyn McIntyre, and Grover Mcintyre.
