Obituary

Ethel Mae Edwards, beloved mother, cherished grandmother, and dear friend to many, calmly passed away on June 12, 2024, surrounded by her loving daughters at Onslow Memorial Hospital at the age of 73. Born on January 16, 1951, Ethel was a remarkable woman whose life was defined by her unwavering love and devotion to her family and friends. She was born in Newport News, Virginia to David Avent, Sr. and Anna Mae Avent.

Throughout her life, Ethel touched the lives of all who knew her with her warmth and generosity. Whether it was through her thoughtful advice or her comforting presence, she made an indelible impact on everyone fortunate enough to cross her path.

Ethel was a devoted mother to two children, Dana Edwards-Hughes (Charles) and Keesha Coke (Gary), and took great pride in nurturing and supporting them in every endeavor. Her role as a grandmother brought her immense joy, and she cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren, Katrina Hughes, Charles Hughes, Jr., and Dainien Hughes, whom she loved dearly.

In addition to her family, Ethel had an extremely successful career as a Human Resources Specialist with the Federal Government, where her dedication and hard work earned her the respect and admiration of her colleagues.

Outside of her professional life, Ethel was involved in her community. She volunteered at church preparing bagged meals for the unhoused population and checking-in children for Sunday school class, and she regularly donated to numerous charities. Ethel embodied her belief in making a positive difference in the lives of others.

Ethel leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and strength that will continue to inspire all who knew her. While we mourn her loss deeply, we find solace in knowing that her spirit will live on in the hearts of those she touched and that she is with family who preceded her in death – Ethel Ricks Powell (grandmother), David Avent, Sr. (father), Anna Mae Avent (mother), David Avent, Jr. (brother), Willie Lacy Avent (brother), Ernest Lorenzo Avent (brother), Shirley Avent (sister), and Katrina Hughes (granddaughter).

A Celebration of Life will be held on June 22, 2024, at 12:30 p.m. at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, 1601-27th Street, Newport News, VA. The Entombment will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens, 155 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA.
