Emma Jane Atkins , 99 entered into eternal rest January 12,2025 surrounded by her loved ones.

Emma was born May 7, 1925 to "Po" Tom and Bertha Yates in West Virginia, the seventh of eight children.  Emma was raised in Ohio before her journey led her to Newport News, Virginia in the early 1940's.

Emma was the original neighborhood watch for Newsome Park.  The saying was "Don't let Ms. Emma, see you do anything because she'll call the police".  Emma enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing the lottery and poker.

Emma is predeceased by her parents, Po Tom & Bertha Yates; husband, James Adkins; seven siblings, Ollie, Lucy, Jim, Dolly, Mable, William and Jerene; daughter, Beverly Robinson; son, Charles Yates; stepson, James Atkins Jr; stepdaughter, Jennifer Weaver; and step grandson, Donnie Lindsay.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories, step children, Carnell (Lydia) Atkins of Baltimore, MD, Bobby (Juanita) Atkins of Williamsburg, VA, Ricki (Rhonda) Atkins of Leesburg, VA; two granddaughters, Monica (Darryl) Boothe of Hampton, VA and Alvenia Coppedge of Yorktown, VA; grandson, Alvernon Coppedge Jr. of Hampton, VA, one great granddaughter, Vernisha (Cory) Fayton of Hampton, VA; a great-great granddaughter, Jada Angove; and one great-great grandson, Levi Faton and a host of other relatives and friends.

Viewing will be held Sunday, January 19, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, 1601-27th Street, Newport News, Va.  A Celebration of life service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 21, 2025 at Macedonia Baptist Church, 5500 Marshall Avenue, Newport News, VA.  Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens.
