Obituary

Elsie Patricia Marshall was born on February 1, 1944, in Newport News, VA, to the late Mabel I. Gregory and Waverly Gregory. She was educated in the public schools of Newport News, graduating from Huntington High School in 1962.  Following high school, she attended Peninsula Business College (PBC), where she became a member of the Delta Mu Business Sorority.  It was also at PBC where she met the love of her life, Earnest Marshall.  Elsie and Earnest wed on December 23, 1967, and from that union was born two sons, Gregory (Greg) and Kevin.

Elsie lived in Newport News and Hampton her entire life. She worked in the public schools of Newport News, serving as a secretary at Huntington High School, and later at Warwick High, where she spent most of her career, serving as a library and teacher's aide. She retired from the public school system in 2007.

Elsie cherished her husband and two sons. She supported Earnest, who is an avid golfer, former basketball coach and mentor to the youth of Hampton, with a deep passion and dedication. She also supported Greg and Kevin during their various sporting activities, from Little League and beyond, being a constant presence at each of their events, cheering them on and proudly letting everyone know that they were her sons.

Elsie is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Earnest Marshall, sons Gregory Marshall and Kevin Marshall, sister Rachel Gregory, granddaughter Kayla Marshall, great grandson Noble Marshall Morning, cousin Vernelle Keller, God-daughter Tracy Gomes-Robinson, her best friend Rita Mask and a host of family and friends.

The family wishes to thank all of the many friends and medical staff who provided loving care and support to Elsie. Words alone cannot convey our heartfelt gratitude and how much it meant to us and, more importantly, to her.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to the American Heart Association.

A private burial service will be held at the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery.
