Elsie Mae
Evans
d. Feb 1, 2026
On Sunday, February 1, 2026, our heavenly Father called our dearly beloved mother, grandmother, and aunt; Elsie Mae Evans to his heavenly home to rest.
Elsie Mae Evans was born February 13, 1938, to Verna and Isaac Lee Spady in Cape Charles, Virginia. She was the 4th born daughter of 4 siblings.
She is preceded in death by her parents, sisters Irene Spady, Mattie Lee West, and Thelma Evans, and one granddaughter India Jones.
She is survived by her daughters; Voncell Duncan (Daniel) of Hampton, Elsa Evans of Richmond, and one son Van Evans of Newport News, her grandchildren Dante Evans, Derek Evans, Diamond Blackwell, and Elijah Evans, seven great-grandchildren, and host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
She graduated from George Washington Carver High School in 1956 in Newport News, Virginia. Elsie married Van Roosevelt Evans, December 28, 1958. She faithfully served on the usher board beginning with Shalom Baptist Church of Newport News, Greater Bethlehem Christian Assembly of Hampton, and First Baptist Church East End of Newport News. She received honorable awards for her service from each ministry.
Her favorite past-times were decorating her home, cleaning, cooking, and quality time with family and friends. She faithfully prayed every night, read her bible daily, participated in church activities and ushered for as long as she was able.
During her final weeks before departing us, she directed her children to take inventory of her possessions and documents, making sure things were handled properly, taken care of, put in order and completed. As family, deacons, and the team members of Innovage Pace came to visit and check on her, she would cheerfully tell them, "I'm going home soon". She represented herself as a God-fearing woman during her journey and she held strong to her faith that she knew the heavenly father reserved a room for her at the end.
