Obituary

Eleanor Mildred Carter Wynne, 83 , of Hampton, Virginia, departed this life on September 4, 2025, at her home surrounded by her family.

Eleanor was the oldest child born to Otha and Hannah Richeson Carter on September 10, 1941, in Amherst, Virginia. Her parents moved to Williamsburg, Virginia when she was four years old seeking better job opportunities. One summer while visiting her grandparents in Amherst she accepted Christ as her personal Saviour and was baptized joining Piney Grove Baptist Church.

Eleanor's formative years were spent on Pocahontas Street in Williamsburg, Virginia, where she attended and graduated Valedictorian from Bruton   High School in 1960.  While in high school, she was inducted into the National Honor Society and served in other organizations.   Upon graduation, Eleanor continued her education at Hampton Institute and graduated in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics.  Following a brief period of teaching in the Newport News schools, Eleanor began a 35-year career at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

She married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, Ronald Wynne in 1961.  Together they built a life of love, service, and cooperation in the Granger Court neighborhood of Hampton, Virginia, that they called home for decades.  Eleanor and Ronald continued to love and cherish one another in their union until Ronald 's passing on July 27, 1998.

Eleanor's life is marked by her service to her community.  Eleanor Wynne was a 57-year member of First Baptist Church where she was loved by and loved the many saints in the church family.  Eleanor truly enjoyed participating with the Chesapeake Club within the church that lent its time and resources to many individuals and groups throughout the Hampton Roads community.  Eleanor was also a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority for decades, and she cherished her sisters and the work that they contributed to the many younger women they mentored.

Eleanor leaves to mourn and cherish her memories: Her sons, David Wynne and Kevin Wynne; granddaughter, Ayisha Wynne Perez (Enrique); sister, Norine C. Ruffin (Herbert); niece Tamara Ruffin Walker (Timothy); nephew, Herbert Ruffin Jr. (Jasmine); aunts Mildred Rose and Irene Holmes; uncles Robert Carter and Carlyle Richeson. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Delbert Wynne and parents Otha and Hannah Carter.  Eleanor will be missed by the host of family members and friends that she leaves behind.
