Obituary

"Your weary hours, days of pain and troubled nights are passed. And in our hearts, we truly know you have found peace at last. Your life is a beautiful memory, your absence a silent grief and now sleep in Gods lovely garden in the sunshine of perfect peace."

Dorothy L. Ellison was born July 17, 1932, at the age of 92. She looked beyond the veil and answered the master's call on December 10th, 2024. She was predeceased by her late husband Issac Ellison Sr. her father Fred Hunter, mother Henrietta Hunter, brother James Hunter, Wilbert Hunter, sister Jessie McCullen, Bertha Grimes, Doretha Stone, Geraldine Jenkins, Eula Holden, Joyce Gatling and Betty Walker.

Dorothy was born in Nash County, North Carolina. Her favorite saying, "Blessed by the Best". She gave her life to Christ at an early age in North Carolina. She later moved to Virginia in the early 50's and joined Galilee Baptist Church in the late 60's under the leadership of Rev S B Byrd. Dorothy served as an usher, sang in the senior choir. Her favorite song was Search Me Lord and she led that song in the senior choir. Even during her illness, she loves listening to gospel music and singing. She loved cooking Sunday dinner and feeding anyone that came to her home.  She never met a stranger. Dorthy worked at the James River Nursing home for over 35 years. She loved going to church until her health started to fail. Loved sitting on the front porch and was called the neighborhood crime watch. She loved her children; grandchildren, family and friends and she considered family.

Dorothy is survived by one brother, Samuel Hunter (Shirley) Newport News, VA.; one sister, Mary Battle of Maryland; three daughters, Dorothy Carter of Hampton. VA, Norene Richardson (Benjamin) of Hampton. VA., and Theresa Monroe of Newport News, VA.; 7 sons, Isaac Ellison of Hampton VA, Edward Ellison of Hampton, VA, James Ellison of Hampton, VA, Anthony Ellison of Newport News, VA, Ivy Ellison of Newport News, VA, Kevin Ellison (Tiffany) of Haymont, VA., and Johnnie Driver of Covington, GA.; and three bonus daughters, Edwina Ellison, Coretta Ellison, and Thyra Frink; 24 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 6 great -great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Viewing will be held from 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 17, 2024 at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel.  A Celebration of Life service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 18, 2024 at Galilee Baptist Church, Newport News, Va.
